Growth under casing

I'm still not sure what the hell happened, but I don't want this to happen again! A while ago I noticed one particular casing was looking pretty sad, so I flipped it over to examine the bottom. There was an 8" fruit rotting underneath the casing, flattened out along the bottom of the aluminum pan. I wish I had a picture to show. It was a very ugly sight.
I only used vermiculite for the bottom layer of the casing.
Is there any way to prevent fruits from rotting underneath a casing to prevent contamination?
Thanks for any help!

Side and bottom pinning happens when the side/bottom is exposed to light. It's even more likely to happen if the casing/sub is shrunken and pulled away from the container.
In the future, use an opaque container or line a transparent container with a black garbage bag. Keep well hydrated to prevent shrinking.

You said you used a bottom casing layer... this provides a micro climate on the bottom of the case. This is part of what induces myc. to start pinning. Seeing as Cubes fruit whether or not you want them to (so to speak) I could see the bottom layer of verm is what did this. Next time try using a black garbage bag liner instead of the verm. Good luck.

thats a very good point, you need as close too #100% humidity for good hypheal knot and primordia formation, having moist verm on the bottom will provide this enviroment and could lead to bottom pinning.
Line the bottom of the tray to prevent light from getting underneat the cake and ditch the moist verm.

I used an aluminum baking tray, which didn't allow light through the sides/bottom of the casing. The casing didn't even shrink very much, and I had no problem with pinning on the sides...
Thanks for the replies!

I love those aluminum baking pans, only problem is the myc eats through the aluminum, wouldn't have believed it till I saw it with my own eyes, a shroom grew out through the hole, it was an abort-but it happened. Now I keep an eye on the pans and cover with duct tape soon as I see the blackening of the aluminum(which is a sign of the myc eating through)

It's not only light that is the pinning trigger (the light can reflect off the side of the trays)
It is also the exposure to air and moisture caused by the verm). As the conditions aren't as optimal on the bottom as they are on the top of the casing, you get less pins formed, but some do anyways.
