The outer layer on the grain of the brown rice, hence the brownness of the grain. That layer contains nutrients that the mycelium thrives on.

Is dextrose from agar? Can you grow mushrooms off dextrose?
Does it like any other nutrients? Does it like starch?

It's not just nutrients, because mushrooms aren't plants. Mushrooms eat their food just like humans and produce body heat as they metabolise the food, just like humans. They also release the carbon in their food as CO2 just like humans. Therefore, they need solid food, not just nutrients. Their preferred food in artificial cultivation seems to be grains, such as rye and rice. You can expand your harvest by using large amounts of less nutritious foods for the mycelium such as manure and coir. You won't find a 'nutrient' that you can add to the solid food that will enhance the crop much, if any at all.

yes, DON'T USE WHITE RICE OR WRF, many have tried to use white rice and their fruits were hardly potent if at all. Also I think you need to stop and read what people have been saying in their responses to your questions. Or you can use the damn search man.

I would think you could use white rice simply for spawning. I know mycelium will grow on white rice and white rice flour... Not well though.

Not totally true.

Using proteins as an example...

Plants consume (in a simple way to put it) "mineral nutrients". It takes nitrogen salts and converts them into amino-acids (all the kinds it needs) to build proteins.

Fungi will digest the proteins present in a substrate into it's constituent amino-acids and absorb them, using them to build it's own proteins. So, fungi, as any heterotrophic being, will need a balanced supply of the amino-acids it cannot synthesize on it's own.

Ever hear about essential fatty acids and essential amino-acids? These are nutrients we have to obtain from our diet, as we are incapable of synthesizing them on our own (plants on the contrary can synthesize them all).

So there is probably certain aminoacids and fats that are required in it's diet (but they won't be the same ones as us humans need) and I'll bet my bottom dollar that these essential nutrients are contained in the husk of brown rice (which contains proteins and oils) and not in the main body of it (which is what white rice is) as that is basically made up of starch which is a carbohydrate.

And in the same way we take diet supplements to supplement the missing nutrients in out diet, I'm pretty sure that they could be used for cubes.

But, and this is a big but, it would require a detailed study of the metabolism of cubes to find out which nutrients it would have to be, as they are different in each species.

RR or anyone,

Would adding maybe a table spoon of Whey protein into a substrate mix be benifical?

That is certainly a no no, as wheat contains bacterial endospores and unless you sterilize it you will get contaminants.

About the whey. Unless someone has made a specific study of the nutritional requirements of p cubensis, the only way to find out is by trial and error. Maybe by making a set of separate grows supplemented with individual amino-acids we could compare results and give an informed opinion.

I think I will give Whey a shot in my next batch... Just maybe two jars. I thinking less than 1 table spoon since it contains creatine which will suck up most of the water.

All rice is brown. The bran layer (brown outer layer) is polished off to make white rice. The bran contains good amounts of proteins and some fats as well as soluble fiber. Brown rice is much more nutritious for consumption, whether human or fungi.

Why would you want to make everything more complex, BRF and Grains have been the method used for 20-30+ years im sure if not longer.Stick with the proven methods or go ahead and try your idea and let us know if it works. It's worth a shot if your curious about it.
