Well I have once asked this question myself, I'd say...(even though I'm still novice) Be as prepared than ever, and have patience...I'd say making the biggest yield is how much substrate you use and land You'll cover...uhm for stronger larger yields I'd say it is kinda like generations, If you grow a yield, cut a little piece off and put it on some agar, this would grow ropey strains(Dikaryotic) place in rye(or substrate) and the next yield should be larger...and larger...
I'm not sure where I've herd it.

If I were you I would use Rye. You inoculate your first jars then when they are fully colonized you can fruit them but leave one aside. Make up some more rye jars and add a small amount of you colonized rye to each jar. Thus inoculating more jars and not needing a new spore print or syringe. I heard you can inoculate something like 10 jars from every one pre-colonized rye jar. If you really wanted you could get some serious home production going this way. 1 jar does 10 or so jars... 10 or so jars does 10 more each, right there thats 100 jars in a matter of a month or so. Also when a jar looks fully colonized leave it for a week or two longer, this gives you a better fruiting. Hope that helps, PM me if this didn't make sense, lol. Gen

Grow some cakes. Once they are colonized break them up and do a MONOTUB! Do a search on Monotub.

If you try and get the biggest yield on your first grow you will probably fail miserably.
I recommend you start with something easy like pf tek (some people will start to flame now as they consider the pf tek a waste of time) before you attempt more complicated stuff.
It can be really depressing(and expensive) when you are starting to have all your grow fail, while a maybe smaller but 100% successful grow will boost your confidence and abilities and you can try something more complicated next time.
Baby steps, baby steps.

If you have a pc, I recommend doing invitro poo bags....fool proof. You pretty much can't mess up if your sterile procedures are good. I yielded over 100dry grams from 4 pints of rye and 5 pounds of pre-past hpoo.

If I could go back, I would skip PFTek entirely. If you have a PC, the ability to read, and are not retarded, then you should be able to use grains to go bulk. Grain jars take less time to colonize than BRF jars, and you will end up with way more spawn. Just be careful, and follow whatever tek you choose like it's the way to salvation. Oh, and don't try to yield 300 lbs. on your first go, because you most likely will fail if you aim too high.

I'd start with PF Tek. It's a good way to get your feet wet. You're not going to yield a ton from it but you'll probably yield something. Once you get the hang of PF Tek try crumbling some cakes and casing them. That'll get you used to doing casings. Then the next time spawn a few crumbled cakes to some coir and case that. Then move on to grain spawn and manure bulk. I agree with Nibin. Baby step your way through mycology. Another reason to start with PF Tek is it's dirt cheep, you can start very small, and it's easy. If you start small you will fail small. You'll waste very little money in failure costs if you have any which is unlikely if you follow a good tek. The problem is, if you don't KNOW someone what's actually gone through this it's hard for a person with no experience to judge a good Tek from a bad one. Here are the ones I've used and find them to work very very well time after time.
WBS TEK http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
Rye Tek
PF TEK
CASING TEKS This one is about the most popular one out there. http://www.shroomery.org/54/50-50-Casing-Tek#5050plus I just use Miracle Grow Moisture Control and I use this tek to pasteurize it. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5669077/an/0/page/0 Here is an old grow log of mine that you can follow for more details. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7088782/page/2/fpart/1/vc/1
Mistakes Etc. Here is an even older log that tells about a bunch of the mistakes I've made. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6634602/an/0/page/1

God I love you... so damn GOOD with noobs. Someday they will appreciate you for this and your life will be complete! ... well, maybe not complete, but... yeah. Kudos, 5 for trying!

Spawn colonized rye berries to 50/50 (coir/vermiculite) w/10% gypsum by volume.
