Here are some new pics. Enjoy! These are a result of the bleach bath method. Soaked coir/straw/karo in bleach water for 8 hours. Strained, rinsed, and inoculated

i don't know why but i can't seem to get that ridiculous amount of clusters in my casings. I get like 7 mushrooms in total if im lucky.

Can you give a timeline for the bleachbath method? I have heard little about this (most dismiss it as a poopytek) and it obviously has results worth a second look.

Ok!
1.Shred the straw to 1-2 inches. 2. fill a 5 gallon bucket 2/3 full with hot tap water and add a cap full of household bleach. 3. Mix in 1/4 cup karo (seems to soak into coir and stay there. Resulting in very fast leap off and colonization. 4.add a 70/30 straw/coir mixture to fill bucket to 3/4 when dry. 5. let sit 8-12 hours no longer than 12 hours. 6. Rinse with tap water 7. add spawn and thoroughly mix. 8. Rinse (yes with spawn in) 9. squeeze and add to containers.(fills about 2 dish tubs to 4 inches deep. 10.Cover top with aluminum foil half way. 11. Cover the other half with another piece of foil so air can enter through the flap. 12. Wait 1-1 1/2 weeks 13. Case with your favorite casing to 1/2 inch. 14. fruit!!
Just so you know! I use perlite/bran/cadboard spawn with this method. It might be why I have such good results. I cannot be for sure though because I have used grain spawn twice with it, with great results!

Sounds crazy.
But you can't argue with the results.

Works every time for me. Only pitfall is that as you can see in one of the pics, wheat can grow from stray seeds. Doesn't affect the outcome though. You have to trim the wheat down once every flush. lol!! It just keeps growing healthfully.

no offense man, but I never even had black kow take that long to colonize and that is by far the single worst substrate i have ever used.
and dont you think if you soak a bunch of bleach (a human poison) up into your substrate, the mushrooms grown on the substrate will contain bleach as well?
beautiful results though.

You would think it would, but it doesn't! This is actually a modified tek recommended by Stamets. A cap full in 5 gallons is not a lot after rinsing twice. Just think about how much chloride you drink in your tap water each day. And how about the fact that the mushrooms actually change the Ph of the substrate after it colonizes it. Something happened to the bleach but I don't believe you are making toxic mushrooms. I have eaten plenty and I can tell you they are just fine.

Just keep playing with that agar! Thats all I have to say about that. Different strains do different things. Amazing things!!! As I am learning every day!

yeah...it sucks ass but alot of people start spawning using black kow (including me) because it is so cheap and easy to get (almost any hardware or garden store).

I have actually bought some of that but never did anything with it. It was like 88 cents a bag or something. I would like to know the way you use it. What moisture levels etc.

for moisture levels in any substrate, use the search tool and find out what "field capacity" means. you can never go wrong with a substrate at field capacity. agar explains it very nicely...in fact i think he coined the term around here, could be wrong though. as for using it, pasteurize and spawn. just like anything else. the yield is crap though...unless you enrich it with something/a few things. read up on complex substrates as well...they work magic. coir is nice too.

The yield does NOT suck from using bagged cow manure. It only sucks if the grower does not know how to properly prepare it. Steer manure actually has more food that cubensis prefers than horse manure.
Bleach pasteurization has been around for a long time. Personally, I prefer other methods, but it works, and the bleach is not drawn into the mushrooms. RR

well there you go then....RR always makes me feel like such a dumbass ... i should have said in MY experience black kow yeild sucks. time to go read my ass off again. maybe RR will be kind enough to come back through and drop a link to the bagged cow poo method he would use to outperform horse manure.

I think the problem is that most (if not all) store bought poo or poo/hummus mix varies by where in the US it is sold, so its impossible for a grower in one part of the country to recommend a product to another grower in another part of the country with consistent results.

Correct. Another issue is that many cattle farmers salt their cows heavily to get them to drink more water (and produce more milk), so that can affect the quality of the dung as well. Since salt is water soluble, leeching can fix this. If you can find bagged STEER manure, that may solve that problem.
If you have trouble growing on straight bagged manure even after leeching it, try mixing it 50/50 with coir and/or other additives.

RR i was advised against using black kow as well, in the past...i would like to know: what ratios of what additives would you recommend to all of those people living in cities where bagged manure is all they can find? keeping in mind that straw would be about equally as hard to find as manure. so many people would likely use coir/verm in place of straw. please enlighten us on how to prepare bagged poo for optimal results. which additives and at what ratios
sorry to hijack but i was told about a year ago that bagged poo (black kow in particular) was the worst possible sub and to never use it.
*edit* found this on another thread (search ftw)
Quote: CaptainLinger said: Letting manure sit for a day or two will do nothing.
Furthermore the stuff you bought from teh store 1) is cpoo, and markedly less suitable for growing (it's fine, it'll work...but you'll need to combine with straw).
Also store bought manure is not only aged, but composted. There will be no problem using it as-is. Black dirt.
Quote: RR said: I strongly disagree. Setting it out in the sun is the preferred procedure. The sun and air will flash away the ammonia from the urea. I rarely combine bagged cow manure with straw. Vermiculite is actually a better choice because it serves as a moisture reservoir. As for mycelium food, it takes a LOT of straw to do much good, but cow manure is actually higher in mushroom food than horse manure. Cut it with vermiculite after letting it sit in the sun for a few days, add up to ten percent gypsum to the amount of the manure, hydrate, pasteurize for an hour to an hour and a half at 140F to 170F and use. Good luck. RR

Yup. Thanks for searching. I have to type that about once a month. Lots of noobs badmouth bagged cow manure because they hear other noobs badmouth it. The stuff works great if properly prepared. I live in a large city too, but have no trouble getting horse manure, straw, organic rye berries, etc. It can all be found. RR

I will say though that I got Into growing mushrooms after seeing beautiful clusters of p. cubensis and panaeolus mushrooms fruiting strait from giant cow patties as a teen in oklahoma back woods on farmers land.
