Wet spot contamination?
    #7788230 - 12/22/07 08:22 AM (17 years, 29 days ago)

Dear all,

My first time growing mushrooms, since there are plans to forbid the selling of mushrooms in Holland :frown: Everything went well, besides the fact that colonization took a long time (I think I my jars were in a location wich wasn't warm enough). Finally, all my cakes are colonized and in the beginning everything was snow white, beautiful. But after a while I also began to notice an orange / brownish colour (see pic). My species are the "Golden Teacher" shrooms.

After some research on this forum I suspect this to be a case of wet spot molds. The humidity in my jars was probably too high (there was water on the bottom of the jars after a while), since I placed them in my bathroom to increase the temperature.
Do you indeed think that this is wet spot molds? And is it necesarry to throw the cakes away, or can I still grow shrooms on them? Unfortunately, all my cakes have this coulour partialy. Some cakes have more, some have less. So if I'll have to throw them away, it was a good lesson  and I'll just start over again.

By the way, there was no particular smell coming out of the jars. Just smells like mushrooms.

Any info or advice would be helpful!

Excuse me for the low quality, I only have a webcam...

The spots look like bruising to me, but can't really tell:(. Wet spot mold has a particular smell of rotten apples, and myc actually produces some water during it's growth, IME. Looks to me like those are ready to fruit!

Ah sorry the blue/green color you see is an artifact of the webcam. It's just the vermiculate you see there. What I'm talking about is the brownish color you see on the white parts. Don't pay attention to the blue: it's not there in real life

Here a picture with arrows pointing at the orange spots. They have a copper-like colour.

Harmless metabolites. I'd give it a dunk and roll, then put into fruiting conditions.

I have just put them in the fruiting chamber an hour ago. I've done the birthing just before taking these photo's. They might indeed be a bit dry, that's what they looked like. Probably because they've been in the colonization-process for too long. I think I know how to speed that up next time.

I suspected this colour to be harmless, but since it's my first time I like to make sure of course. Wouldn't like to get ill from eating my shrooms

To re-hydrate a dry cake, dunk it under water (inside a tupperware in the fridge) for 24 hours. Then roll it in dry vermiculite and put it in the fruiting chamber. Once in the FC mist the cakes so the dry verm gets nice and wet.

This will increase your amount of mushies a lot.

Thanks for your reply, that's exactly the method I followed (I follow the instructions in the famous PEF-tek videos on youtube). I can't wait to see my first shrooms coming up

But why do you suggest to do this dehydrating in a fridge? I just did it in room temperature.

Rehydrating, not dehydrating.

In the fridge bacteria get less of a chance to grow in the water. If you don't want to use a fridge you can use running water (expensive) or keep your water cold somehow else.

If you don't do it in cold, it isn't a problem, just a bit riskier.

Ofcourse rehydrating. Sorry I'm Dutch and though I know there's a big difference between DE and RE I somehow mixed them up

Thanks for your reply!

Aaaah noooo.... today I see the first pinnings... but at the same time I see a blue / green color developing on my cakes... Looks like blue/green mold to me. And of course, it's developing on all of my cakes. I guess I'll just have to start over again.

I'll wait a few hours and then post a picture of my cakes. Probably I should have cleaned my FC better and also be more sterile when birthing the cakes. I didn't really pay attention to the hygene then, because the PF-tek videos said sterility is less of an issue at this stage.

Now I understand why everyone hates green mold and the likes :frown:

It is probably bruising, every set of cakes that i have have bruised and performed well. I put it down to my spray bottle not putting out the finest mist and sometimes landing on the cake.

The bruising has always went away a few days after birthing and re rolling then appeared again.

If it rubs of its mould, but i suspect it to be just bruising.
