Stir bar question

So this is an experimental question. Instead of a stir bar, do you wise people think that i could use magnetic sand. I know that it will make that proper tornado effect, and it also spreads up and down through out the jar so would all of theses small grains agitate the mycelium more then a stir bar would. and would the sand be harmful in anyway.

Stir bar. Safe, Simple, and readily available. Magnetic sand would be a mess. The Stir bar creates the necessary force to create the vortex. I can't even imagine how magnetic sand would react to a strong magnetic field while being in a liquid substance.

Wouldn't you end up sucking the sand up with your mycelium?

I know that a stir bar works fine, That why i said this is an experimental question, with the magnetic sand being readily available i figured this is worth a shot.the sand spreads up and down through out the jar creating the proper vortex,Yes i will suck up the sand in the syringe, my question is would all of theses small grains agitate the mycelium more then a stir bar, and would sucking up the grains be harmful in any way?

I'll be honest with you Grod. I can't see how it would be harmful to suck up the grain. After all, you harvest fruiting bodies and That will not have the grain. I would like to see a picture of the grains creating the proper vortex. If you could do a "dry" run and take a picture that would be cool. Here is a picture of a "dry run of my home made strirrer creating a vortex.

I wonder if Iron oxide is harmful to mycelium... That could be your main problem
