Video Games today

Is it just me or are video games today really really short? I mean sure graphiclly the shit can look amazing, but is it really any harder to paste textures to 3D enviorments then it was back in the day? I remember when I was a kid, it took me a long long time to beat Doom II. 50 levels of demon killing goodness. Doom 3? I mean it was fun, the graphics were amazing, the story line good, but it left something to be desired... Mostly because I payed 39.95 for a game I beat in 15 hours on Hard. Dont even go back that far. Half Life. That game was huge, with days of gameplay. Half Life 2 I beat in a mere 4 hours. Fear was a little better (15 hours) but it didn't really suck me into the story. Look at the Hitman games. They've gotten shorter and shorter every time a new one comes out. Blood Money was great but so short. Why do developers keep skimping out on the content then wonder why I'm not paying 50 bucks on a game that will last me less than a day. I could get 4 days worth of Acid for that price and be left with a fullfilling experience. Games today just cant make the same claim.

I don't think every game does it for this reason but I'm sure a few shorten their games to make them more accessible to more people. Some people just don't want to sit through 48+ hours of game play.
But I have top say as a hardcore gamer it can feel great to make it to the end of a game you've invested that much time into.

Developers are trying to stay with/or ahead of the competition. You cant spend just spend as much time as you want on a game to make it 50 hrs long and still match up to the graphical and gameplay standards of the time. And yes, it is much more time-consuming to make all this new eye candy.
I dont think thats such a bad thing thou. I rather have a shorter, better presented game - then something that drags on to the point of me getting tired of the same repetitive shit and not finishing it. Then again, I don't pay for my games.
And don't race through games. I find alot of people that do that and then bitch how short they are. They really aren't.

Oblivion? Metriod Prime? Really good long games. It's probably not all that easy to fit 50+ hours of gameplay, which probably takes up a lot of space on the disc, and to have good graphics and lots of features at the same time.

In my opinion all the good video games these days are on the handheld systems, if you get Nintendo DS you won't be disappointed. I'd always rather play a really long 2D game with tons of features, story, and beautiful pixel art than the games they make for higher end systems just to show off the graphic capabilities.

I, personally, miss the never ending games from the 70s (PacMan for example)
name ONE game from the past thirty years that you could play for six days straight and still be on level one

same here I rarely play single player games anymore, unless people absolutely rave about them, like portal for example. online games are so much more challenging and entertaining.. nothing like going head to head against other people. computer opponents are either too easy or too hard, its very difficult to make a computer hard without being impossible to beat. the best multiplayer FPS out there right now? TEAM FORTRESS 2!!! cant wait to get it for myself, because i'm always playing on my house mates computer while hes gone..

They turned that series into a movie with button advanced fight sequences >_< Not a fan. FF2,3,5,7,8 Hell yeah.
And you know its not that I race through the games, its just that its still linear gameplay and you can only explore so much. Thats why I loved FarCry. It was HUGE! I could run through the little huts blowing everyone away or slip around the back, sneak up a guard tower and knife someone then snipe everyone down. It ended pretty early but it was long enough to be rewarding. My system can handle Crysis but I hear its even bigger and the enviorments more responsive. Thats what I like to see. And graphics aren't everything, they really arent. I just fired up System Shock 2 again last month because it was so much fun. Does anyone remember the game Cyberia? You had options to how to play out the story. It lead to the same end result but in different ways. Shit like that is AWESOME. I dont mind waiting for a good game to come out and sacrificing the most cutting edge graphics if its gonna be FUN.

because they know that other people will pay for it, beat it, then buy another. the quicker a person beats a game, the sooner they'll buy another. it all comes down to cash. and it's probley not even their own choices to do that, it's probley the company they work for.

I hated the 2d era of gaming(I was fairly young then) I dreamed of the third demension while putting down almost every game I picked up at that point
and now that I have the 3rd demension and I wouldn't have it any other way...I actually enjoy games now!
as for length
resident evil 4(still one of my fav games)
like was previously said I would rather play 12-20hours of a game with true creativety, logical level design, revolutionary play mechanics which make you really feel like the developer made this game for quality and their love of games rather than a quick buck
god of war II was kinda on the short side but what was there was so much better then the majority of crap on the market I could care less
and theres also the extras added to a game to keep you truely interested in playing through again etc
like with all media I look for games where I can honestly say "this developer put true effort into this and really pushed the limits of the genre and dare I say created a work of art"
