Quick mono tub question's...suggestions please

Sorry to be a bother again, but i have another question. In preparation of a mono tub I had some straw soaking and am wondering how long would be sufficient? Some say 3 hours others say all night. Also I figured I would mix a two inch layer of straw with a two inch layer of compost/cow manure that will be brought to field capacity and pasteurized. The plan is to pasturize in oven bags in a pot of water at 165 degrees f for 90 mins. When cooled it will be spawned in a mono tub , this will create a substrate depth of four inches. When it is time to case I plan on the casing layer being 1/2 inch, and was wondering if this will be enough casing. My last inquiry. If I follow this plan it will leave me with nine inches of room between the top of the casing layer and roof of the tub. I have seen where some members suggest you need at least fourteen inches of clearance. So I was wondering can I make this work with the nine inches of clearance? Any suggestions as to how I can improve this dream would be very appreciated. (thats the best i could do) (Nibin)

Much better.
For straw: http://www.shroomery.org/22/Bulk-Substrates
And yes, 9 inches is a bit tight. Don't you have a higher tub?

Nope I sure don't and to make things worse I purchased several of these. The only thing I could possibly do is make the depth of my substrate a little less, say 3 inches. Even then It would only buy me another inch. What is the lack of hight going to affect?

how tall your mushrooms can get. if you dont have any condensation on the lid, you might be alright as the mushrooms will probably just start growing sideways once they hit the lid.

it will affect your FAE due to a smaller volume of air being in your tub. which will also likely make your humidity too high.
Your also going to have a problem with your pasteurization. It will likely take 90min just for the inside of that bag to be heated unless your using a bunch of small bags...
Id say switch to a pillow case and pasteurize for 180min instead.

it seems like if it was affecting my humidity i could just make/add bigger polyfill holes correct? and on the pasteurization i wasn't going to start the 90 min countdown until the meat thermometer read 165 degrees f (inserted into the core of the sub.
