smelly casing material
    #7787196 - 12/21/07 09:10 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

so iasked this question in a earlier thread and didnt get a response to it so i started its own thread because my casing material is through being pasteurized and ready to be applyed and was wondering if the smell is normal.

like i said it sorta smells like hair dye or something and im assuming its from adding the hydrated lime. i only added 1/2 cup of lime to 10 cups of peat.

has anybody else added lime to their casing and had an unusual smell?

How much lime did you use? 5% by volume of the peat is what you are supposed to use.

like my first post says i used 1/2 cp of hydrated lime per 10 cups of peat so thats 5%.

im just really nervous about this smell. i havent applied it yet until i can get a definitive answer from you guys.

Sorry. I guess I missed that. When I added lime to my casing I just thought that it smelled stronger. Not different, just stronger.

imo if you did what you were supposed to do then everything should be fine. you said you have 2 mono's? why dont you just case one of them with your casing material and leave the other one uncased.

ive never done a casing so im not sure what they should smell like thats just my two cents.

sounds to me like your ok... if im thinking correctly, that smell is pretty normal.

Also, you may just want to sterilize your casing from now on. Pasteurizing your casing layer isn't that beneficial, unless you are composting your casing prior to the pasteurization.

i went out and bought a ph tester today. just the one where you add alittle soil then you put some powder in the tube (from a capsule) and add some water and it says my ph is at an 8.

ive looked through some posts about ph in casing and some people say 6.5-7 do you think 8 is too high?
