What to do with the Big blob of mycellium on my cake surface?
    #7788087 - 12/22/07 05:23 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hey,

One last question before a I'm going to fruit my cake.
When you look at the top surface of the cake, half of the dry verm layer is colonised with only a little bit of thin strings of mycelium, while the other half is fully colonised with thick mycellium. This myc fills the gap and has reached the jar lid. So basically I have a big blob of mycellium on the surface. If I were to dunk an roll, and I place it upside down in the fruiting chamber, it won't stand flat but crooked (this blob is like a half inch heigh).
Is this a problem, or should I cut off the blob?

thanks,

The dry verm layer should not colinise, it must have got wet, the dry verm layer is your filter and is there to catch any contaminates that may find its way in your inoc holes (unless they are covered with tape to be doubly sure)

I have never used those tubs before (they are they pre-made ones arnt they)

so all i can say is just go on as normal, wash any uncolinised dry verm layer off the cake, dunk n roll.

As far as it not sitting flatt, instead of sitting it on a lid, use tinfoil as you can moild it to the shape of the cake in the perlite.

Probably when you wash the cake under the tap most of that fluffy stuff will squash down and hopefully it won't make so much of a tilt.

i've had cakes colonize the dry layer quite a few times, usually i just leave it, and lay the cake down sideways

it usually fruits alot there

Mycelium is always good thing, especially during incubation.

Don't worry about a thing.
