how to _FULLY_ protect all your hard drives info if you have the option
    #7788012 - 12/22/07 03:38 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

know what a bios password is? sure you some of you may or may not know they can be cracked with a ms-dos program or 'password dictionary' program in seconds, but on most new computers theres an option in bios to put a password on your HARD DRIVE on bootup, and this is...as a very tech savvy person familiar with linux/windows/even a lil mac, there is _NO_ way to crack this bootup HDD password(and by HDD password i dont fucking mean windows PW or OS password)

you cannot do a god damn thing but enter bios(even disabiling HDD pw on bootup wont stop it from promting the millisecond after bios boot.

however not all machines have them, upgrading your bios(wich can be an unstable thing to do) will probaly open the option if you dont have it, but the hdd password aka HDD master passwordIS STORED ON THE DRIVE ITSELF NOT BIOS...no flashing bios or resetting CMOS will reset this password.

that is all, sorry if this doesent help you, happy if i accomplished my goal of making you feel more secure...i know theirs lots of paranoid folks like me out there that'll find this useful(mabye?)

BIOS passwords can't be brute-forced 'in seconds' unless the password was obscenely simple. Regardless, An HDD password is great, just don't forget it.

Bios paswords can be reset by unplugging the watch battery on the mobo and resetting the bios.

Or at least it can on my nf7-s v2
a boot hdd password would be a different matter

^ I forgot about that.

I suppose you could get really tricky and change your boot order onto an external HDD, which can be ditched or destroyed easily.

New boot sector will take care of that...or as was already said, you don't need to boot from a drive to read its data.

No, you don't. All you need in my opinion is Encase.

As stated, you could easily just reset the BIOS. Also, it's true that the data will still be accessible. And although the password might prevent you from booting, I'm sure software could be written to read from that sector. Anything the bios can write to, you can write to with software as well, and obviously read.

Encryption is a much better option.

Of course there is. It may be difficult. It may take a million years, but it _CAN_ be cracked. A mean person could "crack" it in a few seconds if they had access to the person that created the password and a blow torch. Of course, why bother... just move the drive to a different machine or reset/replace the BIOS.

There are hard drives out that encrypt/decrypt data on the fly as it is written/read from the drive. These are common in business class laptops. Seagate's FDE line, for example, uses 192-bit triple-DES.
