Fruiting Chamber *pic* will this produce fruit?
    #7787433 - 12/21/07 10:23 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

RH fluctuates between 76 and 84. Temp stays fairly constant in the high 70's close to 80. I find myself having to mist frequently and add water to the perlite to keep the RH up. After looking at this image, do think this setup has any hope of producing fruits? Ever since i birthed them they have resumed pretty heavy mycelium growth and are forming what look like sharp white pins all over the surface. does this look ok?

seems fine except for low RH, leave it a week and keep fanning + misting.

Those digital hygrometers will not give you accurate readings in the humidity range we work at.

Is it possible for them to fruit at 84 RH? 80 deg F. is a good temp too right? there are about 15 holes throughout the chamber. should i maybe plug 'em?

Follow RR's shotgun tek and it should work our just fine
84% is more ideal for casings, Cakes need 100%
80f will work but 75f is ideal

As I said, you can't trust your RH reading.

How many holes and how many inches of perlite?

Also, remember, no sitting water in the perlite (any perlite under water doesn't work) and holes at the bottom of the tub are also required.

about 15 holes total (none on the bottom) and about 2 inches of perlite, of which i keep pouring water into because it gets the RH up temporarily. is this salvagable? how would you proceed?

is it okay to be spraying the cakes when there are white pins of mycelium poking out? i always fan afterwards but there is always some standing water droplets left behind.

Don't pour water in, as standing water is not desired.

I'd add an extra inch of perlite, and anytime you need to re-wet it, scoop it out and re-soak and sieve.

OR, make some holes in the bottom so when you pour the water in it comes out.

The added advantage of bottom holes is that air is drawn from the bottom, through the holes and through the perlite. This air is really humid.

did you run the salt test on it to find its deviation. my electronic gauge was cheep and only had a deviation of +5.

Try it. My digital hygrometer/thermometer fucked up because of the high humidity, but my casings still came through.

Problem with the salt test is that the humidity it produces (75%) is in the range of digital hygrometers, but once you get into the higher humidity levels they can't cope and the error becomes much bigger.

Also, the salt test can fuck up digital hygrometers which is why most manufacturers of good quality digital hygrometers do not recommend it.

Get an anologue meter thats adjustable, wrap it in a damp towel for an hour and adjust it to read 100%.

Digital meters tend to be inaractive, and the fact that they run of batteries means that there accuracy can start to go even after just a week as the voltage of the battery drops.

Also with that meter, it will likely die in such a humid enviroment.

U may well have 90% humidity and above and your meters giving a false reading, u wont know.

I suspect that your humidity is higher than that.

1 thing i have noticed with my fruiting chamber is that when the temp gets over 70F it starts becoming more difficult to maintain above 90% humidity. Dunno if anyone else has this.

I agree with everyone. RR's shotgun terrerium hasn't failed me yet!
I need to get his dvd out of appreciation.

Drill about 85 more holes in that FC on all sides and you'll be good to go. Maybe add another inch of perlite but I bet the added holes will do the trick. Just dunk your cakes while you make the minor adjustments to your FC.
