so i wire up the 2 sets separate.

one ballast on top of the other like in the diagram just add another ballast.

That diagrams for 1ballast for 2 bulbs, mines gonna be a ballast per bulb.

yup use one 4 bulb ballast per bulb for 4x action
I have been running some at 2x for a few years so far and they are almost as bright as my T5HO bulbs. I bet 4x would do it.
  and for $200 cheaper

thats how the light came,,,2 ballast for 4 bulbs...and it worked fine, i piggy backed on the same wires and it worked but was really touchy, came on and off,,,well except for the out side bulbs they stayed on...i dunno what the problem could be iv.e tryed a bunch of different combinations

you cant piggy back ballasts together.
it sounds like you had 2 2 bulb ballasts.
you can't double up 2 2 bulb ballasts to one bulb to get 4x.
you may start a fire doing that lol.
go get a 4 bulb ballast for each bulb that you want at 4x.

also if you read the link it says this on there...
"Many ballasts have circuitry to prevent feedback of some sort that prevents being able to connect more than one ballast to one bulb. On a forum on reefcentral's site, someone tried connecting two separate ballasts to a bulb, and fried the ballasts. So don’t use two ballasts on one bulb!"

what you want to do is...
the main power cord you will split and run to each of the four ballasts so you have one power cord for the fixture. then wire up one ballast per one bulb. you have 4 ballasts??? the light originally came with 2 2 bulb ballasts so if you want 4x then you will get rid of those and get 4 4 bulb ballasts. wire each one separately to each of the 4 bulbs.
now look at the diagram that says Overdriving a 4 lamp ballst.
what you will do is connect the reds and blues together 4 total. they will run to the one side of the bulb and the other side will be the 4 yellows.
but if you already have 4 2 lamp ballasts you can run at 2x.

hmmm try at 2x
have the two blues together to one bulb and the two red together to another bulb.
it isn't a ballast that was piggybacked is it?

were the bulbs put in properly??
was it a ballast that you tried piggybacking already?? because if so you may have burnt it out already

if you are going to try overdriving you need to read the WHOLE article and understand it all BEFORE you try it, if your not sure post pictures or draw one. You goof up your wiring bad enough you could be dead
