um ... first of all there are two types of nominating elections primaries and Caucasus. Some are open to everyone and some only to members of a party ( or sometimes just people who say there a party to a party. ) Caucuses can be confusing as they often don't count the votes directly. They are more fun because sometimes people just meet up in this school gym, divide by candidate and fight for the people that walk in to stand with them. Bad news tho, ron paul will not win either in any state.

> Does he really not stand a chance?
Of course. Anybody running stands a chance. Look how Ronald Reagan was polling at this time back in 1979 and where he ended up.
What kind of chance does he have? That, I don't know. I don't see the future. However, I have spent a lot of time running numbers and watching current events unfold. I suspect that Ron Paul is going to surprise a lot of people and do much better than the traditional polls would suggest (by 6%, minimum, with good confidence). At the same time, I don't think he is going to do as well as the online polls would suggest. With Huckabee spoiling the "front runners", Paul has a decent chance to pick up delegates in the early primary states.
An interesting turn of events... the rumor mill is claiming that the libertarian party will not nominate a candidate if Paul wins the republican primary and will instead endorse Paul.
Edit: When I say "by 6% minimum", I mean that if he is polling at 8% in a traditional poll, then I expect him to bring in at least 14% of the votes.

Hadn't heard that yet, but I just got home and haven't checked the forum out.
He's tied for third in Iowa, according to the traditional polls, and the two candidates he's tied with, Giuliani and McCain, have pretty much skipped over Iowa. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assert that Ron Paul will finish second in Iowa.
I'm not sure what is happening in New Hampshire. In the traditional polls, he built up to 8% before dropping back down to 5%. New Hampshire seems to be the most favorable state for Ron Paul.... I'm not going to make a prediction yet, but at first I was saying first, now I'm leaning towards second....
I've already bagged one Iowan vote for him, my mom has never registered to vote before , and I'm going to work towards getting my grandpa on board when he comes up for Christmas in a few days.

I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of "young folks" home for the holiday season that are going to be doing the same thing with their families.

The most short-sighted thing regarding Ron Paul by the media is how readily they contain him as an "Internet phenomenon". They seem to forget that all of these people work and actually exist in real life (at least to some degree ), and are all very active in real life....

I sure hope he wins. I am not american, but as a Canadian, your country really affects how mine is run. I don't like his policy on guns ( i think he is against registration?), I suppose this is a freedom thing, but come on, guns are fucking dangerous! Regardless of that, he seems like a good man. All of you americans around here should support him, and spread the word to friends and family, like that poster above good job man! Word of mouth to people you know is a great way to help out a politician that you support. Next Canadian election I for one am going to try my best to undermind Stephen Harper...what power does one person have you ask? None really, but I assume there are a lot of other young people like me around who see how fucked up politics is, and if everyone trys to help, we may be closer to utopia! even though utopia is probably not possible....wow that wen't on a tangent. Go Ron Paul!

This isn't the thread to really focus on this, but, just so you know, cars are dangerous too. Its time to get over this idea that an inanimate object is inherently "fucking dangerous". Guns don't kill people, people do. There's more than one way to kill a person.

Ok that was a little dramatic, but you do not see guns being used for transportation. A car can be used for transport, storage, show, enjoyment, a place to bang, a hotbox area...many things. I see a gun as an innaminate object that really has one main purpose, to shoot. It's primary function is as a weapon. They can look cool on display, but thats not the point of them. A sharpened pencil can kill as well, so can a machetie, but thats what a machetie does, it is supposed to slice and cut, not to write on paper, that is why they are diffetent. Drugs are dangerous, but you put them into your own body, people dont go around shooting up other peoples veins, but bullets people shoot into other people not themselves. Obviously there are isolate cases and exceptions. I think that when you allow your citizens to carry firearms you give them a chance to kill somone very easily if they get in a bad situation and don't think their actions through. I only brought it up because it is part of his policy that I disagree with...but this is about polling, so i apoligize for that tangent. And I still want him to win.

> I see a gun as an innaminate object that really has one main purpose, to shoot.
... thus, you being the moral judge of all mankind, should get to dictate what you see guns as upon the rest of us?
When I lived in the US, I was about a mile away from a shooting range. I used to go shooting, at the range, once to twice a week. For me, it was very Zen; a great stress reliever. Focusing on my breathing, on my body, on the wind, and losing everything else, I might only fire one shot every 15 minutes or so. After a few hours, I would have fired ten rounds and have a single hole in the paper that all ten bullets went through (from 100 meters, bench rest). So yes, a gun is inanimate, just as a car is inanimate... and yes, a gun can kill, just as a car can kill... just because you do not see a place for guns does not mean that I don't.
> I think that when you allow your citizens to carry firearms you give them a chance to kill somone very easily if they get in a bad situation
I think that when you allow your citizens to carry a cell phone you give them a chance to kill someone while driving very easily if they are talking on the phone. Thus, we should outlaw cell phones, yes?
Why not prosecute the tiny minority of people that actually break the law rather than punishing everybody because they might break the law?

haha I dunno, I suppose it is your right. But still in a drunken bar fight, a dangerous situation, pulling a knife or gun and using it is different than trying to crack open a mans skull with the plastic on your cell phone. But yeah... It still is likely only going to be a problem with an idiot anyways who would cause such a problem one way or another(like maybe a beer bottle). What do you people think the primary purpose of guns are, other than to shoot? U know, at leasy you drink the beer before you smash it over your "enemy's head. Whatever though not my country, not my problem.

fuck and if any thing ever happens and us as a people need to have guns, then i wanna have a fucking gun. criminals will get guns either way, and not every fucking gun owner is gonna shoot you.

Unfortunately, until the US decides to stop policing the world, it is your problem.
> What do you people think the primary purpose of guns are, other than to shoot?
Kind of like nuclear weapons... to give others pause that would otherwise harm you. I've seen the list of countries that have lost their right to bear arms immediately leading into fascism. The list is pretty long. On the other hand, the list of fascist counties that don't have right right to bear arms returning to a republic/democracy is pretty slim.
