Packaging Peanuts for casing

Hey guys, what do you think about this..?
No verm.. have perlite and peat, but they're both the lame "enriched with miracle grow" style, also have coir, straw and poo and... packaging peanuts! I was thinking, if i broke up these peanuts to about the size of coarse verm, and soaked them, they'd work pretty well asa casing, right? just straight packing peanuts? it would be non-nutritive and moisture retaining..
anyone ever try this? let me know what you think.

Are they the styrofoam type? If so I'm not sure how well it would work, I dont think strofoam would hold the kind of water you would want. Might be wrong though, try soaking some and see how much it holds mabye.

Never used peanuts as casing but I use them all the time mixed with the soil of my potted plants. They are light, hold some water, and don't seem to hurt the plants.
In searching previous threads it seems like a lot of people use use packing peanuts this way... thread 1thread 2
lots more... do a search for "packing peanuts".

Fruit uncased if you have to. Don't use packaging peanuts as a casing layer. You can however use real peanut shells as substrate. RR

People have discussed using them in the past, but I think all packing peanuts are good for is fucking up the planet. You don't want to use perlite as a casing either. Your verm mix should work fine though. Good luck.
Peace.

if you used styrofoam, probably not. but there is a type of packing peanut i see pretty often that is biodegradable and highly water soluble. i think it's made of some kind of starch. you might be able to use those.

yeah dude, those are the ones i have.. i want to try this out though.. the idea of casing throws me off.. i dont see why just straight perlite is considered a bad casing medium... it wont support growth, retains water, lightweight and easily breatable...
anyways thanks

The starch based packaging peanuts dissolve in water. I've eaten them on a dare. I believe it's rice starch.

If they're made out of starch, chances are good you'll end up with a bunch of organic matter on top of your mycelium, which will end up being a big mess of bacterial contamination.
