I've run into this once
I over soaked some rye and honestly it didn't work well at all.
LC and MS had a hard time taking to it, G2G worked OK but nothing that great.

Mine was soaked for about 2 1/2 - 3 days though.... smelled like a nasty mess and bout made me sick to PC. lol, I actually soaked it in H2O2, rinsed it VERY well then boiled. was still nasty though.

IMO if it soaks long enough to start making lil firmentation bubbles, it's too long.

Peace.

Pour some bleach in the water, and mix, it will keep the fermentation down.

I soak routinely for 24+.

I do a double or triple rinse before simmering, (probably not even necessary) and the stuff colonizes like wildfire.

I've never worked with rye seed, so I couldn't give an educated opinion. I will say that WBS can soak for long periods of time without going bad. Is Rye better than WBS?

i have soaked it before around 30 hours , and when i asked the same question i was told that it is ok if they didn't sprout , if the temperatues are cold there right now the fermentation will be slow and the chance of sprouting i guess . But anyway well rinsing is another important factor .
peace .

I start with a thorough rinse, soak for 48 hours, another rinse, simmer for 5 mins, rinse, then PC.

Works quite well. After 5 min of simmering lots of rye starts opening up for me.

The kind of rye I use needs at least that much soak time to 'enlarge', you can tell because if it's in a pot, just keep watching the level of rye approach the top water level. Mine keeps 'growing' till around 48 hours.

I think it's easier to get the moisture content right with rye.
So that's my preference, but it's much more expensive.

So If I was to say that I have never had a moisture problem with WBS and that it preforms like a champ then in reality I have no real reason to go to rye...right?

All this time I've been trying to find Rye seed!  I've had nothing but success Wish WBS!  I thought that Rye seed was superior:banghead:

their using berries
and rye berries are superior to WBS if you ask me, atleast if you get organic grade

when i use rye, i don't have any floaters and it doesn't take nearly as much cooking as WBS does

if you soak for 24hours+ you need to worry about GERMination not fermentation
if your rye starts fermenting, then you've got big problems
if it starts germinating it's not very great either, but aslong as it's minimal it can still be used

Aside from the lower cook time requirements for rye berries are there any other benefits for using rye berries over WBS? Does the rye berries promote faster colonization, or do they provide more nutrients than WBS? Do they promote higher concentrations of actives? I have had nothing but success with WBS. I have nothing bad to say about WBS, and only good things to say about it. I've always wondered why I should make the switch. I haven't been able to find rye seed or berries in my area. WBS is cheap and readily available. That is not to say that I'm not curious as hell about Rye.

If the rye doesn't sprout you should be good, I would out it in the fridge to slow it down a bit.

blood you're getting ripped off unless you meant 69 cents
i get 5lb bags for 10$ each

it would be my belief that rye has more nutrients as a lone substrate, but i have no proof

while i have cased rye alone with nice outcomes
i've never used wbs for anything but spawn

i think growth time is about equal

i forgot to mention
i use rye because what i get is organic, it's meant for human consumption so it's more likely to be clean and have fewer contams

i've actually had rye work fine without even soaking it and just pc'n it with the ideal amount of water added
