11,700 consecutive sleepless nights

You’d think going without sleep for that long may have its drawbacks, but not for the man in central Quang Nam province who has never been ill after decades of insomnia.
His inability to sleep has not only made him famous, but also represents a “miraculous” phenomenon worthy of scientific study.
Sixty-four-year-old Thai Ngoc, known as Hai Ngoc, said he could not sleep at night after getting a fever in 1973, and has counted infinite numbers of sheep during more than 11,700 consecutive sleepless nights.
“I don’t know whether the insomnia has impacted my health or not. But I’m still healthy and can farm normally like others,” Ngoc said.
Proving his health, the elderly resident of Que Trung commune, Que Son district said he can carry two 50kg bags of fertilizer down 4km of road to return home every day.
His wife said, “My husband used to sleep well, but these days, even liquor cannot put him down.”
She said when Ngoc went to Da Nang for a medical examination, doctors gave him a clean bill of health, except a minor decline in liver function.
Ngoc currently lives on his 5ha farm at the foot of a mountain busy with farming and taking care of pigs and chickens all day. His six children live at their house in Que Trung.
“I have tried sleeping pills and Vietnamese traditional medicine but nothing helps, even to sleep for a few minutes,” he said.
Creature of the night
Ngoc often does extra farm work or guards his farm at night to prevent theft, saying he used three months of sleepless nights to dig two large ponds to raise fish.
Neighbor Vu said Ngoc volunteered to help beat a drum during the night and guard the house for the relatives of the dead during funeral ceremonies so that they could take a nap.
Vu also said when the commune was planting sugar cane, several people also asked Ngoc to awaken them at midnight to go to work, since he was up anyway.
On Ngoc’s prolonged insomnia, Phan Ngoc Ha, director of the Hoa Khanh Mental Hospital in Danang said sleep disorders often cause anorexia, lethargy, and irritability.
But, in special cases, some people can handle it and still live and work normally, although this was a very small ratio among insomniacs, Ha added. http://www.thanhniennews.com/features/?catid=10&newsid=12673
dam u could get so much accomplished without sleep that fool is truely superior i wonder how his fevor affected him they really need 2 study more of this man

i take naps every day to hold me over until i can sleep again - this guy is nuts.
i'd know so much if i were him. do you think he is tired, but can't fall asleep? or that he just doesnt get tired?
if it were the latter, then i'd DEFINITELY love to have his condition, but being exhausted and not being able to sleep would blow.

Yeah, I don't know if I buy it either. From what I've heard, after an extended period of time without sleep your body will just shut down all together and you'll pass out without much warning.
I mean 33 years? Eh, i'm pretty skeptical.
Some of those asians do love their meff, though.

I dunno you guys. It says here that...
"In April, 2007, however, Ngoc reported that he was beginning to feel grumpy due to the lack of sleep."
grumpy.
I call bullshit on this though. There is no possible way to go that long without sleep.

There is a drug now that you can take which removes the need for sleep. It's not a stimulant, either, not even like caffeine!

You will die without sleep. He may be sleep deprived for years, but not sleepless. It's impossible.
Furthermore, there's plenty of evidence that lack of sleep negatively affects one's health.

There is a drug now that you can take which totally removes the need for sleep.
I read about that. Its effects are temporary and only work on monkeys not humans. It's called CX717.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CX717
This guy sounds like the other popular BS story going around of some monk who hasn't had food or water for several years.
I doubt this guy really stayed awake for years. And his story of visiting his doctor sounds like BS too. A competent doctor would have ordered a sleep study (polysomnography) which involves monitoring a patient's EEG and other parameters while he spends a night in a medical sleep lab. From the story, all the doctor did was a hematology study. By most standards, that's malpractice.

Oh wow, there's another one. From the Wiki article, I don't think that one can be used to indefinitely postpone sleep either.

however, theres a belief in some religion that sleep is only needed because our mind puts emphasis on the need for it as a way for the body to repair itself.
As truly absurd as it sounds, if you go down to the last figment of possibility of such a thing.. could very well be true.

This couldn't be true.. the human brain (and body for that matter) needs sleep to function and rejuvenate itself. Ok.. maybe I could believe someone going 30 days without sleep.. with the aid of drugs... even though that's highly unlikely.. but 20+ years? No way.. I can stay awake for about 3-4 days (without drugs) before I start to hallucinate and start going insane. After a while my body and brain just shuts down on its own and I have no choice but to sleep. More likely is he sleeps 1-2 hours every once in a while.. enough for an REM cycle or two here and there.. I just refuse to believe someone can go without sleep for that long. And if you just never sleep there's no way you would be able to be that productive. Not mentally OR physically.

I have been modafinil for a year off and on as needed. you eventually have to sleep. One thing i notice is my body is falling apart from lack of sleep.
I have gone 48 hours no problem with no sleep using modafinil, but after that... i started to feel the sleepiness and drain. You gotta sleep sometime even on modafinil.
So far i have gone 3 weeks with 3 hours of sleep a day on modafinil, but it takes a toll on the body.

I didn't sleep for about four days in Hong Kong once because I didn't want to pay for a hostel bed and I didn't trust sleeping on the street because I was carrying a phone, PSP and a couple hundred in cash.
Oddly enough, as long as I kept myself fed, I was good to go the entire time. I didn't sit down much at night because it was uncomfortable on benches and every time I found a bench that didn't have dividers, so I could lay down and write, I got kicked off.
Keep in mind that I'd been sleeping only about three hours a night for the last month. I just kept reducing my sleeping time more and more and it never seemed like it was a push.
