i shouldnt have to right? i had my connection % between 60-75% because i modified my antenna with a waist basket and some mylar. But now im back down to around 26% and it holds there pretty steady. Im thinking its because there is more than one firewall running on the network.
could i get fucked up if i turn mine off and just let his run?

Firewall should have nothing to do what-so-ever with signal strength.

Alright that makes sense to me too. Is there a way to explain why my signal strength is at 26% and has stayed at 26% for over 24 hours now without moving at all. My link quality is jumping around like crazy just all over the place. But signal strength is 26% and I'm telling ya will not move.
I had this all the way up to 65%+. There better not be some type of dumb ass regulator in the software for this thing.

Signal strength is going to be a measure of how much signal is getting to the radio. Link quality is going to be a measure of the signal to noise ratio.
If somebody puts a wall up (closes a door, for example) between you and the base station, then your signal strength would go down. Adding a better antenna or stronger transmitter will increase your signal strength. Good line of sight will increase your signal strength. Getting close to the base station will increase your signal strength.
Electrical interference, such as running AC motors, or other electronic equipment will produce noise. The noise will be seen as a reduction in link quality (as the signal to noise ratio goes to hell). An increase in signal strength will help the ratio as will a decrease in noise.
Finally, there are some really unintuitive aspects of wireless. Imagine a setup where you have a long wall with an access point at one end and a laptop at the other, each on the other side of the wall:
Code:
Laptop.................................... WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ..............................Access Point
Although the equipment may not be very far apart, the signal has to travel the entire distance through the solid wall. I have also seen the orientation of the antenna make a huge difference in some installations.

For a great demonstration of this, get a good signal strength and then turn on a microwave. The link quality will dive, I lose my connection at home when someone uses the microwave.

Thats cool information. I was playing around with that the other night. If I put a sheet of mylar between my antenna and my hosts house my signal strength goes 100% dead. You know what I just realized though? When I was getting them good readings I was using ubuntu and a wireless tool in there. I cant test my theory now but when I grab another hard drive this weekend for ubuntu I'm gonna see what happens.
When I was booted to ubuntu and had signal strengths of 60-65%+ I did the speakeasy speed test and I was downloading at 1300kbps and shit like that. Now in windows using the software that come with the antenna I'm downloading at 700-800kbps and 26% signal strength. Something is going on with this crap. This is probably something I will have to figure out myself.
Ill call my host and ask him if he did anything stupid like put the router in a box or something.

Alright I just proved it. Something is wrong with either my windows settings or the hawking program or something. If I am booted in windows I am forced to install the drivers before the antenna will work. If I am in ubuntu (no drivers) the signal strength indicator light on the antenna is maxed at 5+. If I am booted in windows the light is at a 1.5-2 on there little scale. If im in ubuntu the software is showing I never have any less than 60% signal strength. While booted in windows (and using the hawking antenna) the antenna is stuck at a solid 26% and never moving signal strength. My download speeds are almost twice as fast booted to ubuntu than in windows.
What gives guys?

The only thing I can think of, other than Windows Sucks, is that the Windows drivers might limit output power based upon region. Countries regulate the maximum transmission power allowed for these type devices, and not all countries are the same.

Yeah. Im thinking on the same lines. I called the hawking tech support and all they did was have me turn off my firewall, and restart the computer. Then when that didnt do anything like I already new it wouldnt they just said well we dont even now how you got it to work in linux without installing any drivers. I just told them I didnt have to try to get it to work linux just snatched the wireless connection and I was rockin.
I love ubuntu and all but it just sucks when I cant get a bunch of different types of videos and other non compatable stuff to work.
As soon as they figure out how to make everything that works in windows work on linux thats gonna be a awesome OS.
