Dark caps

Currently two cakes are flushing in my FC. One of the cakes has dark brown caps (not black). You can see it on this pix:

There are still growing, all of them. IOW, they are not aborts (yet). The cap of the shrooms of the other cake are not that dark-brown:
Could anyone explain the cause of this difference? The differences in fruiting conditions between the cakes have been, for about 10 days: - the temperature near the cake flushing mushrooms with dark brown caps was about 2 C lower than the other cake - less fresh air could have been exchanged near the cake flushing mushrooms with dark brown caps (so less than the other cake). I'm not 100% sure about this BTW.
Do these different conditions explain the difference? If not, what else could cause this?

I'm assuming you inoculated with multispore so you probably just ended up with a darker capped substrain in that jar. They will probably lighten as they grow

The only 'strain' (using the term very loosely) I've worked with that consistently produced light colored caps is Pink Buffalo.
Right now all of my Cambodians have the darker caps and EQ's always display this characteristic as well.
It's a strain related thing. Everything looks really nice, btw. You might want to inject some extra h2o into that cake or give it some good mistings. It's got sooo many mushrooms pulling moisture out of it that you'll get a great flush, but they won't all be huge. It really looks nice on a cake.
Peace.

Thanks for the explanation and compliments. I've used the same spore syringe for both cakes. Yeah, the mushrooms won't get that big, but it's the 1st flush so that shouldn't be that exceptional. I expect the next flushes to consist of less mushrooms, but bigger shrooms. That seems to be a normal thing. I'll mist the sides of the cakes, maybe that will improve the flush a bit.

Lipa Yia have always produced quite light caps for me, i just had one that was almost albino, it was white all white until the cap opened up, it now has the faintest hint of orange on the cap in the middle.
My EQ's had darkers caps.
Its quite possible to have completly different looking shrooms from the same strain, with multispore.

Even if you injected with the same syringe, each jar will contain different substrains as they had different spores.
The only way to have the exact same genetics in all your jars is using cloning.
If you want to boost the water content of your cakes mid-flush, sit the cakes in a saucer of water for 24h, topping it up as needed. Ten take the saucer away.

I have done that on a few occasions, and i believe it helped produce bigger mushrooms. An indication of the substrate drying out is when it starts to bruise.
I have also injected water into the substrate using a syringe, but i do not recommend it

Ok guys, I just had a look at the shrooms and noticed all of them had opened caps and some of them already started to sporulate. So I decided to pick them. Here's what they looked like right before the harvest:

I harvested 47 gram from this small cake. It wasn't easy to pick that many shrooms. Sometimes a little bit of the stem remained on the cake - I removed that as well, otherwise it might start to rot later. In doing so, I had to touch the upper side of the cake quite a lot of times, 'cause it wasn't easy to remove. I hope my hand didn't contaminate the cake (I washed them with anti-bacterial soap in advance BTW).

Thats a real nice flush too look at, nice one . its nice when they all grow tightly like that, try cloning one from that i just got my 1st flush from a clone that i done and the difference from multi spore is massive not all the mushrooms looked exactly the same but they all carried the chariteristics from the one i cloned they were real fat and fleshy with big caps really impressed, any ways nice flush good luck with the second
