Finding a good job
    #7780340 - 12/20/07 03:11 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

What's the best way to find a good job that isn't so soul draining. I am currently a cashier at a grocery store and it fucking blows. Preferably something on the chill side.

Are you looking for a serious lifestyle change, such as education, or are you looking for more of a "lets go apply tomorrow" kind of thing?

I had the same problem, I worked in the Pizza business for 3 years and I found it really unfulfilling. I got into a job working in a mill working with my hands and actually making things. While the job was a lot dirtier and in many ways harder than my previous one, at the end of the day I left with a sort of satisfaction that I wasn't just a replaceable face in a shitty restaurant, I was good at my job and I could do it better than lots of other people.

Try looking for a job where you can set goals and accomplish them, where you have something to show for your work, not just an endless supply of tiny menial tasks that leave you bored. People say hard work pays off, it really does.

im going through this right now, since they decided to let us go for the Holidays...  I will say it has been a positive experience because my needs have changed. You have to do two things
1) identify your monthly expenses.
2) identify what you like to do.

I have had 3 interviews in 2 weeks. Seems if you are not looking for full time work, or health benefits / 401K there are jobs everywhere.
Luckily my soon to be husband has a great job, and can out me on his health plan.
I just need a PT gig for cigarettes and candy. I am in such demand, I am turning down jobs.

SCHOOL BUS DRIVER!!! Total fucking retard job. It's not as hard to drive a bus as you think and they are always looking for drivers. As long as you don't have any DUI's or have a record of abusing children they'll hire you. Plus you get to collect unemployment during the summer. You will however get piss tested so you'll need to invest in some fake piss. Also CDL driving requires employers to do randoms on employees so you'll need to keep a bottle on you at all time while working. I did this for over a year and it's easy as shit. Little kids can get nuts sometimes but just keep writing them up and eventually they'll get kicked off the bus.

Write your resume so it implies that you have already done the thing it is that you are applying to do.

If you really have never done whatever it is, hit the library a few days before the interview.

Its a good idea to ditch the man and do something more on your own. That way you won't always have some dickhead complaining that you slept in too long.

Please steal my business idea that I am too lazy to do, start alderwoodchips.com and organicrye.com. Both things are easy to find in bulk but hard to get at stores, split it up and mail it out.

Since little tiny plastic bags are often used for drugs, they are legal yet impossible to find at stores unless you live in the ghetto. I just ordered a bunch of bags from captainbags.com. (small bags in small quantities). Looks to me like another good thing to order in bulk and advertise on ebay. You could be the shroomery's official little tiny bags vendor. : )

hahahaha I work for Verizon. Business maintenance (former MCI/Worldcom)... I work tickets for circuits that go down.

I get way more than $12/hr. That must be for general cust serv for wireless or residential.

no way I'd ever work for residential.

but so far, Verizon has been a pretty sweet job. The environment I'm in is very laid back, almost no office politics, everyone gets along and there isn't that pressure of meeting the goals like I've had in all my other jobs.

can't say the same for every dept/segment, but so far I really like Verizon. They match your 401k dollar for dollar up to 6% and 50% of their contribution will be in their stocks. Health insurance, dental, and vision are all reasonably priced... but if you're a smoker you have to pay more. thank goodness I don't smoke.

I get 10 paid floating holidays, 7 paid sick days, and something like 128 hrs PTO every year and some type of formula to determine a raise every year.

anyway, really try for vrzn, they are a great company to work for.

that's for wireless cust service.

ANY call center job that deals with customer service, ESPECIALLY residential wireless, will be the most soul destroying, low-paying, piece of shit job that will test the limits of the human threshold of stupid every single day.

those jobs are SHIT and I would suggest finding something else before getting into a world of taking call after call of stupid people who are angry wanting an explanation of a 10 cent tax or for you to turn their phone back on if it's been suspended for late payments. You'll hear every excuse in the book, and I don't know where this thought came from, but the most common excuse you'll hear is "I didn't get the bill in the mail this month". OH, so even though you had service on your phone, you think that not getting a bill in the mail excludes you from paying this month?

My first job, other than waiting tables in highschool, was taking calls for a wireless company.

it SUCKS

What's the best way to find a good job that isn't so soul draining.

You've probably heard this answer before: school.

People with extremely common skills (like making change) will always have a shitty job. It's the nature of supply and demand. People with rare skills (read: skills they learned in school) will usually have better jobs.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

I work at Australia Post... driving a big red van around collecting mail from post offices and standing/pillar boxes for $27/hr.

Best non-skilled job ever, easy work and you don't have to interact with anyone.

If your postal system is still government owned (like ours), chances are it's really easy and has awesome benefits like ours.
