First Time - Advice - Help Appreciated
    #7779950 - 12/19/07 11:19 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I'm not new to the site but i am new to posting here.

I'm also new to cultivating magic mushrooms but i've done my research.

So I'm gonna go with the B+ strain and the PF Tek for my first time

I have a secret door underneath my water bed with a space that is about 1.75 feet wide and 8 ft long (length of the bed)

Since my waterbed is heated it is nice and cozy warm under there.

I'm gonna use 2 liter bottles for my Fruiting Chambers and do each cake individually in its own bottle..Can put prolly about 6 - 8 2 liters in there..I'll prolly go with 5 tho.

Any comments or advice? Thats pretty much the summary of the plan.

I will use perlite in the fruiting chambers (the bottles) should work out nicely I hope.

I'll check back tomorrow to see what I get from you guys and I'll keep you up to date..

This is the plan though, gotta get paid friday then go get supplies and order a spore syringe..

Can anyone sum up the total cost I'm lookin at?

Like i said lemme know, thanks.

clean the space well before , and colonization at room temperatures are better since on higher temperatures contaminants favor more then shroom mycelium , it would not cost over anything i guess 30 $ .and since the heat rises if the bed is not directly in contact with the floor it might not heat there ( which is not a bad thing .)

Thanks

Only 30$ you think?

the Spore syringe will be 20 ( shippin included)

and vermiculite, brown rice flour, perlite, jars, ect

The necessary components will be more then 30$ I'm guessing..

Anyone else?

These prices are what I have seen locally:

Small bags of verm and perlite go for about $3-$5 each

Brown Rice is around $.70- $1 per pound (make your own flour with a coffee grinder)

A dozen 1/2 pint jars $6-$7

When I looked at some data online, it showed all kinds of mold will grow comfortably in 60-90F range so it seems if you've already contaminated your substrate, you're screwed at any temperature.

Another thing, "room temperature" is subjective and varies significantly from house to house I'd imagine.

Theres a little door to get in the compartment under the bed..I figure I'll open it and fan some fresh air in their a few times a day and I will poke holes in the 2 liters so they can breathe.. that way opening the door should be enough/ but fanning will help..

Prices look good and affordable.

Room temp will be about 75 degrees F for me and it feels like 80 in the spot where I will do my growing.

I'll take some pics with my phone tomorrow to show you guys what I'm workin with as far as space is concerned..then allow me some time to get my materials (gotta order a spore syringe friday) and I'll give pics as necessary.

Thanks for the feedback keep it comin guys!

Don't worry, we're in the same boat. I love my hobby more than most. I hermit myself away as to maintain utmost safety. In other words, no one enters the den, NO ONE!! Not mom, dad, sis, bro, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, so called "friends", enemies, especially girlfriends and all else. I don't let anyone in. Trust is easily broken and when it is, it places the one in question in a state of danger, usually big danger.

I suspect FAE is going to be a big big issue with that secret compartment thing. Make sure you open it up as much as possible and if you have a PC, look into making bags (filter patch bags) to fruit in vitro (in the bag).

With a small space with not much airflow the risk of contamination increases drastically.

actually room temperatures have norm which is "22 celcius" or "72 fahrenheit" . I didn't say that molds dont leave at those temperature i say they germinate less .So even if there is a contaminant mycelium can take over a substrate before contaminant . Besides keepin at room temperature and mold spores favoring more then mycelium in higher temperatures are not even my sentences if you have any question ask RR or giving keywords search rr's posts and see for yourself .

This is truly a hobby that is satisfying, i've been through:
-Nitro R/C (extremely expensive)
-Building crazy computers (still do)

-Graffiti(still do)
and none have satisfied me as much as seeing some monsters grow in tubs, knowing that you have thousands of dollars in potential.

I'm in the process of gettin materials too. most of the stuff i just found around my house, but as for perlite/verm it gets kinda pricey around here for some reason. i dont even know how much the verm costs but it is definatly more than the perlite. in some places they try to get you buy not having big bags of stuff so it forces you to not buy in bulk which sucks. but do you know how much the verm costs in your area for a big bag?

Ahhh Hello there friends sorry for my neglegence of posting I have been busy with work and gettin shit...

I got everything I need all I need is the spores which Im ordering today, soo..

I decided a betetr idea was to use my trunk..

I had it in highschool at a military academy its like a foot locker kinda trunk and it locks.

The FC's are those tupperware things that you put cakes in soo it has a moisture lock and 2 will fit comfortably in this trunk allowing 8 cakes to fruit at a time..

The top tray of the trunk will fit over the FC and rest nicely still i nthe trunk with room ontop for the colonizing jars..

All in one nice locked secure unsuspicious location.

Should be fun and i look forward to taking this step in cultivating mushrooms as to further my experience and turn it into an enjoyable hobby with a posotive outcome :tongue2:

Everything is all packed up right now but I'll get pics of setup tomorrow or so so you can see the setup and I'll post again when I begin the process of inoculation..

I'll stop in often to converse with you all in the mean while =)

Hmm..Sorry for double post tried to edit the old on...

I found my tupperware and jars at Wal-Mart

horticultural vermiculite and perlite at my local garden store (Steins)

And the brown Rice Flour was obtained at my local grocery store i nthe natural foods section (Pick'N'Save)

All in all it costed me about 35$ and the spores then will make it around 50$

Alright Alright, I'm ordering spores today...

For all of your entertainment, lets decide together what kind of spores?

I'll be working off of cakes in 1/2 pint jars closely following the PF Tek.

I was thinkin maybe B+ Strain?

So, what strains will do best/have you had good experiences with on cakes?

Thanks Guys Pics coming very soon.

I thought B+ maybe cause its said to be very versatile and will grow easily.

Or is this true with Golden Teacher as Well?

Golden Teacher is very easy to grow.  My first grow was with it.  I wasn't thrilled with the potency though.  But that was the first and last time I used BRF/verm cakes.  Since then, I haven't had that problem:rockon:

Hm, I was going to go with B+, then I decided to consider Golden Teacher.

I've heard Golden Teacher has higher potency though, I also know that cultivation methodsn are a alrge part of potency as well..

Therefor I suppose i would have success with either so I think I'm gonna go ahead and go with the B+ for for an inital attempt at success and we'll go from there.

I jsut wanna get a hand at growin mushies before i skip to bulk so this is more or less a trial period for me.

So ordering spores today, and from there we will go.

I'll post pics along the way once it's set up like i said.

I appreciate all the posotive reinforcement/feedback/advice and let me tell you I'd be nowhere fast without you guys.

Merry Christmas to all and keep it coming!

Naw, starting very basic and working my way up.

I plan to do 8 - 10 1/2 pint BRF cakes that I will fruit in 2 Tupperware Cake takers with perlite on the bottom. They will be fruiting in these FC that will be locked inside a trunk and I will go in and open/fan for FAE and misting regularly..They will also be exposed to some light for 12 hours.

Just my little start project and when I get the hang of it I can do bulk, considering I am getting 2 horses in a month that will provide lots of good poo.

I should be recieving 1 Golden Teacher Spore Syringe probably tomorrow I'm guessing cause the snow is so bad right now where I am.

So happy trails and wish me luck I will post pics like I said when it's all up.
