That poo is probably filled with horse piss since it is mixed with woodchips(bedding). That's most likely the shit thats at the bottom of the stables so the horse pisses in it too. Horse piss will kill your spores/mycelium & render it useless.

Yeah, that's a possibility. Try it, never hurts to try. Read up on pastuerizing too.

I just came home from a job and on the way stopped by a local farm that has several horses. ?I asked the farmer if I could have have some horse manure and he just asked if I had a bag to put it in and directed me to the pile. ?I asked him if it was stall muckings and he said yes, so I was disappointed, but went to see it anyway... I found that there were PLENTY of seperate dried "road apples" all over the pile of shavings!!... I filled my bag and now have over 20 pounds of dried horsey poo ready to bust up and pastuerize!!

It smells really sweet too!! No (amonia) pissy smell AT ALL!!

PSYCHED!!! (or I will be)

Try finding a field with cows grazing, goto the farm's house and ask if you go in the field and pick up some of the cow's manure for your garden. Say, you(or your parents, etc) prefer fresh dung. Back in the day I was told that Black Angus(black and white cows) was good poo for mushrooms. Maybe just a rumor... ?

This is one of the reasons it is important to dry the dung.

Black and white cows aren't Black Angus, they're Holstiens.
Cow poo from grazers is cow poo from from grazers. Breed makes no difference.

actually, not all black and white cows are holsteins. there are also baldies, which are a breed of blackies (black angus) and herferds (reddish brown with a white face). and the manure doesn't change quality with the breed of cattle-it depends on what they eat! i grew up on a beef cattle farm.

(off the subject-i don't know what sort of diet produces the best kind of poo for growing shrooms, but if you are eating beef try to find beef that was grazed on grasses, instead of put in a stall and fed grains. grazed beef is far healthier for you.)

Actually human poo is to acidic LOL just picking, But to answer the question, you may want to ask the owners of the horse stable if you can get some poo from their fields that the horses graze on, not the stables. Wood chips contaminiate soooo easily it seems like, and trying to separate the pee covered chips from the poo would be a nasty long hard job. But if your really gung ho give it a shot. bluhoney
