Could this work?
    #7777751 - 12/19/07 01:50 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

So I want to dry my cactus. I thought of an interesting way to do it and I was wondering if it would do any damage! Could I put it behind the heating vent to dry?!? what I was thinking was to put it in newspaper and just throw it down the vent. And there is no way I would lose it if I put it there. so thats not a problem. Would the constant air flow make it dry better?Does the heating vent release dry air? the hottest it would get is 70-75 the most. so what do you think? great idea? or stupid?

i don't think it is a good idea i have had cacti get a cut or break in shipping and being wrapped in news paper , the cut gets the news paper all wet then rot sets in.

i vote for out in the open with a fan is going to be your best bet

it probably gets hotter than that..

just because your room is 70-75, doesn't mean that the air coming out is 70-75

know what i'm saying?

i dont know about that nor anything about drying out cacti..

i would probably recommend a food dehydrator, but i believe that they get pretty hot themselves.

might be faster if you cut it in half or something and run a fan on it a couple hours a day or something..

i know cacti are built to retain water.. getting it out faster than naturally would be a pain in the ass im thinkin..

taken from onlne
"Once you have healthy garden soil, rich with healthy compost* you can make potting soil. But first you need the right compost. Compost is a substance called humus that "mediates ion exchange" to plant roots. Yet compost may contain either beneficial micro-organisms (aerobic decomposition) or harmful micro-organisms (from anaerobic decomposition). You can't buy organic compost from most garden supply stores. You have to buy it from an organic gardener (hard to locate) or make it yourself.

If you cannot buy it or make it you can steal it from a forest. That black, clean smelling stuff at the bottom of leaf piles is humus. In fact, early organic gardeners used to collect this stuff from forests to spread on their fields. But please do not think that cow manure is compost! Nor is "Redwood compost" sold at garden centers. Stay away from "mushroom compost" as it is a waste product. Sure, you can get compost from any number of people or stores that swear it is compost and I guarantee you it is either 1) not fully composted, or 2) contains wood chips that will rob nitrogen, or 3) contains harmful bacteria."

The person at home depot said they didn't sell cactus soil anymore! They said it was discontinued. I think that's BS though. maybe its a seasonal item? I went to 2 different home depot's and when I was there they called a third home depot a no one had it. Then I went to my local nursery and they had none too! Luckily I had some in my basement that i just found:thumbup:
