Year of global cooling

By David Deming
December 19, 2007

Al Gore says global warming is a planetary emergency. It is difficult to see how this can be so when record low temperatures are being set all over the world. In 2007, hundreds of people died, not from global warming, but from cold weather hazards.

Since the mid-19th century, the mean global temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. This slight warming is not unusual, and lies well within the range of natural variation. Carbon dioxide continues to build in the atmosphere, but the mean planetary temperature hasn't increased significantly for nearly nine years. Antarctica is getting colder. Neither the intensity nor the frequency of hurricanes has increased. The 2007 season was the third-quietest since 1966. In 2006 not a single hurricane made landfall in the U.S.

South America this year experienced one of its coldest winters in decades. In Buenos Aires, snow fell for the first time since the year 1918. Dozens of homeless people died from exposure. In Peru, 200 people died from the cold and thousands more became infected with respiratory diseases. Crops failed, livestock perished, and the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency.

Unexpected bitter cold swept the entire Southern Hemisphere in 2007. Johannesburg, South Africa, had the first significant snowfall in 26 years. Australia experienced the coldest June ever. In northeastern Australia, the city of Townsville underwent the longest period of continuously cold weather since 1941. In New Zealand, the weather turned so cold that vineyards were endangered.

Last January, $1.42 billion worth of California produce was lost to a devastating five-day freeze. Thousands of agricultural employees were thrown out of work. At the supermarket, citrus prices soared. In the wake of the freeze, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asked President Bush to issue a disaster declaration for affected counties. A few months earlier, Mr. Schwarzenegger had enthusiastically signed the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, a law designed to cool the climate. California Sen. Barbara Boxer continues to push for similar legislation in the U.S. Senate.

In April, a killing freeze destroyed 95 percent of South Carolina's peach crop, and 90 percent of North Carolina's apple harvest. At Charlotte, N.C., a record low temperature of 21 degrees Fahrenheit on April 8 was the coldest ever recorded for April, breaking a record set in 1923. On June 8, Denver recorded a new low of 31 degrees Fahrenheit. Denver's temperature records extend back to 1872.

Recent weeks have seen the return of unusually cold conditions to the Northern Hemisphere. On Dec. 7, St. Cloud, Minn., set a new record low of minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit. On the same date, record low temperatures were also recorded in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Extreme cold weather is occurring worldwide. On Dec. 4, in Seoul, Korea, the temperature was a record minus 5 degrees Celsius. Nov. 24, in Meacham, Ore., the minimum temperature was 12 degrees Fahrenheit colder than the previous record low set in 1952. The Canadian government warns that this winter is likely to be the coldest in 15 years.

Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri are just emerging from a destructive ice storm that left at least 36 people dead and a million without electric power. People worldwide are being reminded of what used to be common sense: Cold temperatures are inimical to human welfare and warm weather is beneficial. Left in the dark and cold, Oklahomans rushed out to buy electric generators powered by gasoline, not solar cells. No one seemed particularly concerned about the welfare of polar bears, penguins or walruses. Fossil fuels don't seem so awful when you're in the cold and dark.

If you think any of the preceding facts can falsify global warming, you're hopelessly naive. Nothing creates cognitive dissonance in the mind of a true believer. In 2005, a Canadian Greenpeace representative explained “global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter.” In other words, all weather variations are evidence for global warming. I can't make this stuff up.

Global warming has long since passed from scientific hypothesis to the realm of pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo.

I remember back in the mid 80's, it was the ozone hole that was going to kill us. Glad that we made it through that problem without getting burned to a crisp. Of course, we spend a lot more on energy now that we can no longer use freon and instead must use less efficient chemicals. Score another for the energy companies.

Yeah, who would've thought that a massive international campaign to stop the use of CFCs might actually have an impact?

Global warming folk will say that we are causing these record cold temperatures, because we are melting icecaps and throwing shit off balance. I know that upsetting the earth's equilibrium can potentially have strange consequences, but COOLING because of WARMING? Thats a good bit of doublethink.

Fuck the hypothesis on global warming, because it's the solar system thats heating up. Solar output has been increasing, but is now passed the peak of this sunspot cycle, and going down. The explanation of cooling need not be so complex. Occam's razor.

All these peer-reviewed scientific journal articles seem to disagree:
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=global+warming

As a matter of fact, your little google search doesn't necessarily provide articles to support your assertion that they support Anthropogenic Global Warming.  First one at the top of the page starts with this:

Quote:

Over the past 100 years, the global average temperature has increased by approximately 0.6 degrees C and is projected to continue to rise at a rapid rate. Although species have responded to climatic changes throughout their evolutionary history, a primary concern for wild species and their ecosystems is this rapid rate of change. We gathered information on species and global warming from 143 studies for our meta-analyses.

It doesn't say anything at all about causation of global warming, it accepts it as fact (although a mighty weak fact; 0.6C in 100 years).  Your 247,000 google hits are not anything at all what you say they are, which is this:

"All these peer-reviewed scientific journal articles" (disagree that global warming is pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo).  One out of one that I reviewed didn't say that at all.  Why, there could be thousands and thousands that say it IS mumbo jumbo.  Amazingly dishonest.

It actually started going down several years ago, as temperatures continued to rise. If this article is accurate(and I'd have to see something about it from a more neutral, scientific organization to take it seriously), then it may be that the down cycle has surpassed the amount that greenhouse gases could make up for. If this is true, then hopefully it will buy us more time to get off of oil and reduce the output of greenhouse gases.

What a stupid article. Another pile of bullshit written by someone who is just out to beat up Al Gore. Pot calling the kettle black, because the article totally ignores science just to get its agenda across.

The inability of people to understand that you can have gradual global warming and still set records lows is telling of another weather phenomenon: idiot wind. Global warming (and I am not arguing whether or not it is happening or if it is anthropogenic) refers to a gradual increase of the global average temperature.

So in an insanely oversimplified model where you considered the average annual temperature of two places, the northern and southern hemisphere, it could break down like this: In 2000 the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere was 75 degrees and in the southern hemisphere it was 25 degrees, so the global average was 50 degrees. The next year, the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere was 101 degrees and the southern hemisphere was zero, so for that the global temperature average is 50.5 degrees. Thus you have experienced global warming. A simple, simple concept that ultra conservatives insist doesn't exist and un-informed alarmist leftists insist is the apocalypse.

The Al Gores of the world would point to the hot year in the northern hemisphere and proclaim "look, global warming!" And dolts like the guy who wrote this article would point to the southern hemisphere and say "global warming? But look how cold it is down there." Both groups are idiots with agendas and aren't interested in the language of science at all, just the language of getting payed at the end of the day.

I don't think Gore or anyone else is suggesting that the temperatures will literally fry us but that weather patterns will change leading to massive disruptions in populations particularly near coastlines.

Personally, I think it should be referred to as "Climate Change" rather than GW. I guess that term isn't sexy enough though.

Quote:

In 2007, hundreds of people died, not from global warming, but from cold weather hazards.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that temperatures will rise instantly in all places simultaneously. Just that global temperatures on average will continue to rise. There will always be spots both colder and warmer than average. Cherry-picking data to support either side of the argument is unconvincing.

Also, as I said earlier, the massive deaths from warming would presumably occur not directly but from the resultant change in weather patterns. So comparing direct deaths by cold vs. heat is not very helpful.

Quote:

Since the mid-19th century, the mean global temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. This slight warming is not unusual, and lies well within the range of natural variation.

Yes, but over what time frame do those natural variations normally occur? If the rate of increase is much greater today (and I suspect it is) then populations will not have time to adjust and absorb the economic, social and political impacts.

Quote:

Antarctica is getting colder.

More cherry-picking of data- this time by region. The idea is that average global temps are increasing. This guy either doesn't understand the concept he is arguing against or is being deliberately dishonest.

Quote:

Neither the intensity nor the frequency of hurricanes has increased. The 2007 season was the third-quietest since 1966. In 2006 not a single hurricane made landfall in the U.S.

Cherry-picking by region and plucking only those years consistant with his belief.

Quote:

In Peru, 200 people died from the cold and thousands more became infected with respiratory diseases. Crops failed, livestock perished, and the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency.

More cherry-picking. Dick Cheney should hire this guy to procure his intelligence. It appears he is more than up to the job.

We did have a hole in the ozone. When I went to Austrailia you had to wear sunscreen if you planned on going out for more than 20 mins or you would get the worst sunburn of your life.

Oh, and I am so fucking sick of all of the people who point to one problem that causes global warming, like the sun cycle, greenhouse gasses, ect. The reality of it all is that ALL of these things contribute, and it IS a problem.

No, dynamic climate change is the term used by science since the dawn of meterology. Global warming is a term created by the globalists to scare people into thinking an unnatural change in climate is underway.

> I'd like to see you refute global warming

The theory of global warming is based almost entirely on extrapolation. Anybody that has studied statistics or numerical methods knows that extrapolation is inherently unreliable. It is a guess at best; often a good guess, but a guess none-the-less. I won't argue that the earth's climate is warming, as we are coming out of an ice age, but any claim that the warming is unnatural or man-caused is nothing more than a guess based upon extrapolated data.

Certainly the projections are guesswork, particularly when dealing with things years from now, and no one really knows whether it will melt the Greenland ice caps or just alter weather patterns slightly. But the trend is there for anyone to see, and there is at least substantial reason to think humans might be contributing to this trend.
