wooden surfboard
    #7775716 - 12/18/07 09:53 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I'm working on building a hollow wooden surfboard using the methodologies
employed by the gentlmen at this site.

it's basically boat building techniques applied to surfboard shapes.

I've started with a 4 foot 'test' board.

I transcribed the rocker from a swallow tail I have and scaled it down.

I figured this way I don't need to go about wasting a lot of good wood
building a full-size paper weight as many mistakes are sure to be had on
my first pass....and there were plenty indeed.

this is what I have so far:

I'm currently gluing up the panel for the deck.

I'll have it clamped and glued tomorrow morning and shaped by dinner.

what's really mind blowing is this bead and cove tek they use for the rails.
you can see I stacked mine up...very tough clamping and doesn't leave a lot
of meat for shaping the rails...this is what they are doing with a simple
bead and cove router bit to shape the wood into rounded interlocking pieces:

that is simply incredible.

I should have a new board by my birthday based on the results of this
first try.

the photos are a little fuzzy.

I think the bead and cove method will give me better glue lines on the rails.

I need to let the planer flatten my deck and hull...I tried to do the
finishing work with my hand plane but the walnut has a lot of figure which
makes it difficult to plane without a lot of tear out.

I was always afriad to surf south bay when i lived in the LA area. I stuck to HB, Leo, Oxnard, and occasionally Ventura. Although Ventura has the WORST locals on the fucking planet. I got my tires slashed there once. If I was going to ventura, I'd go at odd times in the afternoon. Posting on surfline I noticed a lotta people who were assholes to the noobs and kooks tended to be from south bay too so I stayed away.

Fucking Ventura assholes. I always stayed far away from everyone else as well and never even came close to dropping in on anything. In most cases even when I had it, I'd give way to the longboarders who look like they owned the spot. Dickwads.

If al Queda ever nukes a spot in the U.S... I hope they take out C Street while all the locals are out there.

Then again.. that's where I proposed to my fiance :P I should have picked a better spot.

HB has the nicest locals because there's plenty of space. I learned a ton when I lived there.

Went to Trestles once... that shit was my favorite. I felt like I was in another world out there away from everything.

yeah, once you hit Ox/tura, things get SUPER localized...

honestly, South Bay isn't that bad.

EVERYONE surfs El Porto...I usually hit it a couple towers south of el porto
because it tends to be a little better, less crowded, but there is a local
crew there...I just stay out of the way and share waves...it's a beach break
so it's difficult for anyone to really run the spot, per se.

we do have lunada bay down here, but you just don't surf it...I think LB
is the pinnacle of localization in california, even moreso than windansea.

I just realized after returning to socal from living at Ocean Beach in SF
for years is that the surf here just fucking blows. period....it's small
and largely shitty unless you want to drive to suit the swell or you live
in La Jolla...I just go out weekday mornings and evenings...go paddleboarding
on weekends and avoid the crowds from the 909.

At least you don't have to wear a wet suit year round in Socal (only 9 months/year.. hah!)

If you LIVE near a beach and get a chance to go on the weekdays... it's not that bad in VC/LA/OC. I had that luxury in HB, along with it being a beach where you can get 2+ miles of good breaks.

On weekends though... don't even bother. I don't think there's anywhere between Dana Pt and Malibu that isn't fucking packed as shit on weekends.

That's why I did Leo a lot.... close to town, but you don't have to deal with a crowded lineup... probably because too many people are freaked out after watching the surfers there SMASH into the giant rock. My first day there I watched one dude with a helmet wipe out and roll right into it.

At least if you get impaled on one of many under-water rocks there, there will be plenty of spectators to get an ambo there quick :P Plus the locals there are really chill. They figure if you're annoying as shit, you'll reap what you sow REAL fast.

If you get a chance, cruise up PCH and look for it on the western most end of Malibu. Although, I wouldn't bring a board you wouldn't mind gettin dinged

oh, btw, started the full size board.

modeled on the big skip frye fishes...final size should be around 7'10"

shaped board using http://www.aps3000.com and exported hollow frame parts
to PDF and printed up in full size at Kinko's

tail profile

feather board I nigger rigged to help with resawing the boards down
to 1/4"

milled lumber, 1/4" boards, redwood, walnut, basswood, poplar

gluing panel

final panel

keel and ribs before glue up

centered profile on panel and outlined shape

built a rocker table and shimmed it to fit the profile of the keel
rocker to help bend the panel to fit the frame.

wet towels and clamps

You've never been to Leo? It's a really nice spot. Really rocky. Just cruise down PCH to the very far outskirts of Malibu a few miles past all the crowds and you'll find it. Just look for a cliff where you don't see anyone, but there are like 50 cars parked on the side of PCH.

Just watch out for this rock:

Just be careful of the rocks.... if you go out at Low tide you'll see there are plenty of underwater rocks west of the main rocks. I almost landed on one after wiping out.. but it's fun..

It's kinda like HB.. even on a bad day you can still catch a descent wave here and there.

Had a bit of a setback.

my towels were far too wet, I over-saturated the panel
casing it to cup and split.

so I layed up a new panel...it's about 4 hours of work going from rough
lumber to final glue up on these things...but I'm getting the process
dialed.

after the glue was done, I did some initial bending on the rocker table

and then yesterday I actually glued the frame to the panel and clamped it all
down. the panel curved to the shape of the rocker well...not cracks or
creaking...just waiting for the epoxy (3M 5200) to finish curing so I can
start laying down the chine and the rail strips.

In the meantime, I'm enhancing my router table a bit by fitting it with a
t-slot for a horizontal featherboard. this way I have lateral and vertical
pressure on the 1/4" strips I'm milling with the bead and cove bit.
