Hi, I am new here, and have only ever grown plain old white mushrooms from a store-bought kit before. I am grateful that I stumbled upon this board in my searching for useful info because frankly I am overwhelmed by too much and not knowing what would be useful vs. what is not. I live in an itty-bitty place in mid-northern Vermont and would like to try growing a small amount of shiitake for my own food uses only. I am imagining if I got the smallest possible stuff and had a clue of how to grow them slowly it'd work out fine. My space is too tiny for a log, so I am hoping for pointers/sourcing for a small block type thing that maybe I could do in a container ? Thanks for any help and pointers !

Hey now, Welcome to the Shroomery. I actually just found this yesterday because I believe Tahoe pointed me towards the sponsor's forum (some pretty interesting reading over there too, had me reading this drama for about an hour, like a mushroom soap opera, but I digress). Here it is; http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Three-Pound-Supplemented-Sawdust-Block-w-Rye-Grain-Pocket-Gour-p-16357.html Basically a ready-to-go block of a supplemented wood-based substrate that I believe you can inoculate directly with a liquid culture syringe. If you follow the link it gives you pretty detailed info on their product. It also looks like the price includes a culture syringe, which if that is correct would be a really awesome deal.
In fact since they sell some of those cultures for about the same price I do think I am reading that wrong. If not, I may buy the ten bag kit
Somebody double check that for me please... Light and Love, JD

YES !!!!! Thanks Very Much Jeremy - that is soooo perfectly perfect !!! From the site you linked to: 'Each bag contains three pounds of properly moistened, bran supplemented sawdust and wood shavings. A unique and incredibly handy addition to this bag is the 1.5 cups of rye grain located near the self-healing injection site. This small pocket of rye grain allows for direct culture inoculation with the gourmet culture of your choice (included).'
The drop-down to choose which species you'd like is at the bottom and there's quite a few to choose from too, though no obvious way to make a 10-bag batch up with different ones that I can see - so I've emailed them for more info and will share any reply I get here.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You !!!
