A Sad Day - RIP Hero.
    #7774726 - 12/18/07 05:45 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I randomly woke up at about 4am this morning feeling like I should go check on our ferrets.  I'm glad I did - our oldest and dearest ferret, Hero, was curled up clearly in distress in the corner of her cage, with her eyes barely open.  I took her out and she was very dehydrated and cold.  I rushed her to the emergency vet down the street where they suspected a case of insulinoma (low blood sugar) - they tried to get a catheter in to her, but her blood pressure was so low and she was so cold that they couldn't.  When they finally got a blood sample, the news was unfortunately worse than insulinoma - her blood sugar was fine, but her kidney levels were not....she was in full kidney failure :frown:  Ferrets don't respond well to treatment for kidney failure, and at her age, they respond even worse.  I made the choice to have her euthanized so that she wouldn't suffer any more.  Just last night she was out of her crate for play time, running around, eating, drinking, playing normally....it's amazing to me how quickly these little guys can go down hill.

Hero came to us almost 3 years ago, and was such a great ferret.  She was sweet, never nippy, and super gentle.  SO many people came to our house and said "Are those ferrets?  I've heard ferrets are mean!  Do they bite?"  We would always introduce them to Hero, because she was so trustworthy and so nice to everyone.  She changed many people's opinions on ferrets as pets, and we miss her dearly.

Here are some recent pictures of her - please say a little prayer for Hero if you get a chance.

No - the first thing on my mind while they euthanized my pet wasn't snapping a picture of her.  But, I'm sure you'll be happy to know, she did look very peaceful.

Randal - I know :frown:  I hope that we've filled out death quota for the time being.  I don't know how much more I can deal with.

Dude you guys are assholes!!

Sorry to hear that about your ferret man. I used to have a ferret and I absolutely love the animals! She looks like she defiantly had some fun in her day. Remember the times when she played with the dog or slept in your jacket, not when she was sick!!!

Also a ? for ya, I've never seen an all white ferret b4. The top pic & the ferret all the way on the right looks completely white in that pic. Is it just the lighting or is it like an albino or something?

ferrets are awesome animals. They are so fun and they each have their own ticks and personalities. They truly are individuals. No one is like another you will find.

That sucks that happened. I've never had ferrets, but I have played with them, and spent pretty decent amounts of time with them. I couldn't imagine getting attached to one and then losing it. I'm a very animal-clingy person.

Hope you get through everything ok.

The ferret that looks all white in that picture is Villain, Hero's alter-ego

He's actually not all white, but is called a "silver mitt" ferret.

However, when his winter coat comes in, he's *almost* all white.  There are lots of all white ferrets, some with white eyes (albino), and some with dark eyes like Villain.

That's what Villain looks like with his winter coat - almost all white (he's a great climber)

Here he is with his normal coat

weird how they change color as their coats fill in and out, right?

Thanks Drewwyan, Dr_gonz and notapillow - I really appreciate your kind words.  It always really, really sucks to lose a member of the family....but at the same time, if it was her time to go, I have to accept it.  I was worried on the ride to the vet clinic that it could possibly be some sort of virus that could sweep through all of our ferrets, but luckily, kidney failure is not contagious - I'm grateful for that.  My vet said that they start seeing health problems in ferrets when they get to be about 5-7 yrs old.  Hero was on the younger end of that, but the girl we adopted her from could have been a bit off on her age - who knows?  I'm just glad that we got to spend many happy days with her.  She had lots of friends here - her ferret buddies, the cats and the dogs all loved her, as did we.  I'm glad that she wasn't sick for long, so the memory I'll be left with is her when she was healthy, and not sick.

I am sorry for your loss. That seems to be a very very personable animal!

I have never had a ferret but people say they get quite smelly.
otherwise i'd love to have one.. my cousin had one and it was damned aweomse. a little mischevious but amazing. and cute too.

are they a pain to take care of?

I'm not going to lie - ferrets, if you don't care for them properly, STINK.

Ours are all litterbox trained, and we change their box every single day.  You wouldn't have to do this if you had one or 2 ferrets, but where we have 6 (5 now...) it's necessary.  We also wash their bedding once a week and clean out the removable trays from their cage, which helps a lot.

They're definitely a fair amount of work, and you have to play with them a LOT.  If you don't they'll get depressed, and not like you very much.  Most people who come to our house say that it doesn't smell like we have 10 animals running around, which I guess is a good thing

I don't have any sugar glider experience actually - they require a ton of time that I don't have!

Plus, they're illegal in my state
