We tend to give these guys more credit then they deserve IMO. It's true they had some excellent ideas and insights but that doesn't mean they were right about everything or knew it all. We tend to get sucked into believing these guys were perfect.

Kinda hard to tell without knowing them personally, isn't it? Based on the writings about them, they seem like they were pretty enlightened.

jesus think he was the son of god. buddha showed people the pathway of enlightenment. he didn't think of himself as a god or someone of great power.

Exactly. We assume much and know little.

religions that instill gloomy, guilt-ridden outlooks on their clientel aren't that great in the first place.

Unless you ever spoke to them personaly, i wouldn't take anything away from them. Sure, the were human capable of human mistakes, but they treaded in waters that others have not. Their names have lived on throughout millenia, which is enough reason to believe that they represented, is something that we still have to concern ourselves with today.
Even if they never existed, the connotations their images embody are of great value.
If everbody walked around preaching the same codes of divinity, we would not be where we are today.

i wouldn't take anything away from them. by the same token you don't need to give anything to them either. We don't even know who they were and if what is attributed to them actually came out of their mouths.
And you are totally guessing that others did not tread that path before them and come to those realizations. Really now I don't think Jesus said anything that new.
