Feeling... nostalgic!
    #7772197 - 12/17/07 11:19 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

A couple of the days "Noob" questions and then the veterans answers has me feeling a bit... nostalgic! Yes, that's right... 8 Brown Rice Flour cakes on deck and should be "in the hole" tomorrow. Koa Samui, non-super multi spore inoculation. I even fired up my old incubator and am now dialing it in to the optimal temps. Everything looks just like I remember it!

I've been perusing the forum all day and came upon this little thread here...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7768981/an/0/page/0

As I read and viewed the attached pictures I kinda fell in love with the simplistic beauty of it all. Once full colonization is reached I'm going to use the "hydra-pod" tech. I've never tried it myself. I figure I may as well, besides I think a whole shit ton of those would make for a good pic, don't you think?

Expand your cake, use a couple of handfuls of coffee grinds and spawn your cake to a larger container with a decent depth/surface area.

The pod is nifty for noobs but if you've done this before useing that 1 cake to make a yeild worth of 3 is the way to go.

I could do a lot of other things if I wanted. Truth be told, I don't care about how much I harvest or even how potent. I simply want to do this as something to reaffirm that this is a really, really simple and cool hobby when proper method is applied. I could do so, so much more but I've pretty much made up my mind that this is what I'm going to do, and I'm stubborn as an ass.

Those first eight cakes are cooling down in the glove box. All of those are also still in the pot along with Lysol, a dish of bleach (1/10, water to bleach) a zip-lock with the syringe inside (disassembled). I just took a shower and pumiced the hell out of my face, neck, arms and hands and washed myself from head to toe with anti-bacterial body wash. Fresh laundry just came out of the drier, complete with long sleeved shirt, and I'm in the process of re-clothing my person. I didn't even use a Pressure Cooker (PC) so as to give a good example (and further beat the hell out of a dead horse) as to what can be done with very little and on the cheap. And it's my honest belief that simplicity is inspiring.

My big hang-up here is simply how SIMPLE this really can be... I love the simplicity! That is my inspiration for this project.

God, it's been a while... entirely too long;)

Washing yourself head to toe and spraying down your environment with potentially harmful chemicals does not sound like simplicity, but a properly constructed glove box works just as well even around outside air currents with incest smoke, weed, hash.... Santa's elve's are crazy little bastards I tell you!

This "IS" simplicity at it's poorest.

boiling cakes is only a partial sterilization and most of the time depends on how well your spores do, which can lead to slow growth and eventually the bacterial bloom of doom.

Your being overly cautious about steps the inoculation procedure and skipping what the most crucial of all, full sterilization of your substrate. I have rye jars going on three months contam free.

Not to gripe man but your focusing to much attention on the innoc before the sterilization.

Is that what you smell after Uncle Ray has his way with you?
You should get a 5 gallon water jug and be simple with one of those.

 The key word being "buttom"... Anyway, I love to scrape dead skin off of my person before performing surgery as it prevents massive staff infections (especially in mycelial tissues.) As for the Lysol, I spray and wait. I realize it has only surface applications, but that is what I'm after. Air won't move in a still air box, however particulates may drop from the ceiling of the box itself, thus I prefer the responsible use of Lysol. And for the bleach, well, it speaks for itself. It's good on gloves as it evaporates quickly and does a DAMN good job of sterilizing. Love... peace... and happiness for all...

PS- I didn't spray myself with harmful chemicals, though their application was administered (responsibly and carefully) within the glove box itself. Sterility is key here, as many a veteran would purport. I am aware of the possibility of mutation due to the use of chemicals within the glove box. Great care has been exercised to ensure the vapor has settled. Besides, I do not so much mind the mutants, they are a great source of entertainment for me. All else aside, I wish to clone the beautiful ones.

OK, all steps followed with the utmost rigidity... all contamination vectors closed (except one (syringe) that I know of). It's my duty to inform all that I've met with 100% contamination. It seems my syringe was heavily contaminated with the same type of black mold. In case anyone cares the syringe came from Spores101.com (who I found out was removed from the sponsor list shortly after I ordered my syringe).

I plan on cloning the healthiest section of mycelium. Though I don't have the best lot of selections... which figures. The syringe I used was loaded with spores to the point where they were clumped up in a was the size of a small pea.

Back to the drawing board. I wanna say that not everything was a loss.
