Psilocybe cubensis "B+" on grass clippings
    #777131 - 07/25/02 10:28 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I am always in search for the ultimate free substrate. I love fruiting off of different materials.

I colonised millet w/ a multispore inoculation. I mixed 1 pint of the colonised millet w/ pastuerised lawn clippings. I picked the dry clippings w/o color.

The container was spawned on the 18th I believe. I cased it today w/ 60% coir/30% verm/10% oyster shell. I wil transfer it into fruiting conditions very soon. I need to clean out my fruiting chamber first though.

NICE! Now that is something that could really make a good 'outdoor' tek as well. I hate paying some bloke to haul away grass clippings. Good show, Josh.

Joshua,

I thought you mentioned you had a nearly endless free supply of mint compost. How does that mint compost do compared to other substrate material more commonly used? Bye the way, that F+ took off like like a space shuttle & is roaring through numerious bird seed jars! Thanx.

Hey there,

That's enough to make your (my) ears ring some, ehh!?!!

That colonization looks good....I took all my excess and put it in some 6 inch plastic pots with dried lawn clippings on the bottom, a little cow poo, the excess from the cake and grain spawn, some more poo, a little water, and some more dried grass on top. Set four of them of four strains on bricks in the shade the other day. I put the recent grain and cake spawn in several different types of substrate to see how well they do and what will and will not work for me...the GT on rye berrie grain in Scott's is doing real well. The EQ, Brazos county, Lipa Yai, T3 and Florida cake crumbles are in Scott's with either some extra verm, coir or cow poo added to see how well they work in combination. Do you keep your substrate in the dark while colonizing?

Best regards,

KingBolete

Glad to hear you got it started so soon. I do have access to the compost, in fact I did another spawn using the mint compost the same day as this one was spawned. I used a 1/2 pt cake of Ecuadorians. It is still colonising and is about 95% complete. I think the lagging speed is due to the difference in spawn material. W/ the mint compost the mycelium immediately become rhizomorphic, it is quite beautiful. I will try post pictures soon.

KingBolete-
I definately keep my colonising substrate in the dark until ready for casing.

Here is the casing now. I just put it into my fruiting chamber. I always put my casings in early.

If things go well, I might start hauling your grass clippings away for free!

Hey there,

What is mint casing? I heard somebody mention that. I have heard the expression about the knots...are they little protrusions up in the mycelium..is that a fair description? Sorry about the plethora of questions..your post prompted them.

Are you guys gettting smoke from the fires up your way?

Best regards,

KingBolete

PS I went out and did Astronomy last night...

Mint is a crop grown here in the Willamette Valley. The mint is processed for its oil and the refuse made into compost.

Hyphal knots are mycelium aggregates that preceed pin formation.

I am quite too far north of the fires to be getting any smoke.

These pics were taken @ 1:30 am on 8/6.

You will learn very little if you do not ask questions, they are very welcome.

Well I guess that worked
Now I have to weigh up the price of straw compared to the effort it takes mowing the lawn
No effort versus cheap straw???
hmmmm, guess both are just as easy.

Those are some pretty massive fruits Josh!!!  You seem to have casings pretty much down to a  T.  Haha, I myself am starting to get into spawning manure, and I hope it all works out for me!!

Keep up the good work man, it's nice to see some variety in substrates n' stuff!

I have grown a couple of other strains from it. Search on the main page for "mint", I doubt if you will find too many matches other than my posts.

Send me a PM and let me know where you are from.

Washington doesnt count, the Willamette valley ends at the Willamette's entry into the Columbia. Plus you have to pump your own gas

I am hunting azures the weekend of the 19th an 20th, 2 weeks away!!!!
