Substituted BRF for White Rice Flour
    #7770888 - 12/17/07 06:32 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I tried using White Rice Flour other than BRF because I could not find any. And I was wondering if anyone has seen a size difference between the mushrooms from BRF and WRF? Because my shrooms are comming out quite small. (to me atleast)

So you think that would be the reason?

ive read a few things about mushrooms grown from white rice flour to be nearly inactive. white rice flour doesnt contain the nutrition that the mushrooms need to grow strong and healthy like us and protein/calcium.

Poor nutrition, maybe? I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they were weak, as well. There is a similar thread that was active yesterday, where a guy was using bleached white flour in place of brown rice flour. Well, it didn't go very well for him. Other than that, make sure that they are getting enough moisture, and FAE. Next time, use BRF or step up to grains.

If you can find plain brown rice, just make your own flour with a coffee grinder. It takes all of 5 minutes.

Here's what happens when you use white flour in place of Brown Rice Flour (BRF)...

nice. It's good to get some results instead of questions sometimes. Thanks for using white flour, I've always wondered but never tried. And good luck with the next ones!

There is no substitute for Brown Rice Flour, you can get it in health food shops, it is a tad expensive though. You can by organic brown rice, grind that up in a coffee grinder to make flour.

I have heard rye flour works aswell, but you will need a pressure cooker.

Rice bran is even better than brown rice flour, but white rice should be avoided.
