It can for some people because your missing out on the things that go on at night like concerts, parties. But you don't have to worry about waking up early, I work 3rd shift so i feel like I got all the time I need to get things done i might not get much sleep but at least it's easy to get things done.

I'll make like 400 bucks during a good week, working 30 hours busing and running food. It's a good gig if you can get a good flow going.

i've only worked in one restaurant, but it was my experience that working up required constant harassment of the owner and the showing of an eager will. i worked as a busser, a host, a dishwasher as needed and eventualy persuaded her to make me an asst. chef, as i am a much better chef than a customer service person. i found it stressful as all get out, but not always in a distressful manner. the biggest trouble i had was communicating that when i cound't keep my head above water on a slammed day, it was because the requirements where unrealistic and that the work-load wasn't being well distributed. with the bussers doing most of the work with the patrons, the dishwaser actualy did almost as much work as the wait people per top. many days i was the only buser for three waitresses or the only dishwasher when the dinner rush exploded and had to convince a stubborn employer that accomodations would have to be made. in a state where the minimum wage was the federal, i had to constantly pressure for a raise and try to create opportunities to improve my work to convince this employer that i warranted them, aside from and beyond my willingness to take last min. shifts, work any position, work two positions in the same shift, etc.

this all made it an involved and politicaly orriented job but at the same time, helped me learn business better and most of my co workers where great. my employer was pretty cool most of the time and i would do it again, but might also consider drinking on the job.

I work two serving jobs, it is the slow time of year (december) and I make like 500 a weekend... obviously some of that goes right back out, food ect. But still a job that can be super fun if your the people pleaser type and super shitty depending on your clients.

One thing to remember... if you enjoy what your doing people will see and feel the good energy = better tip... and don't let a bad tip or multiple bad tips get you down, always another table and things have a way of working out.

Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback

I hope I can find a job, it shouldn't be hard at all. Just seems overpopulated in a college town. I would honestly prefer to skip the whole bussing thing, because I can only imagine how shitty of a job that is, but i'd still do it.

If I were to lie about previously serving, is there anything I should really know before I start laying my bullshit?

that you will not get away with it.

Your first nite on the floor and you will be exposed for a liar and a noob.

start as a a busser.

I've been a litle afraid of that,i mean worst case scenario, i dont have a job anymore, i think its worth a shot. but learning menu + table + operation while bussing might work towards my advantage instead of jumping in head first.

we'll find out today
thanks

Man, you got a bunch of responses to this..

Innonminate (and others) definitely gave you some good advice:  your customers are key, treat them like royalty.

Be careful about which restaurant and position you choose.  Chains usually do suck, but privately owned ones can suck just as much or more.  I worked at a private restaurant for 5-6 weeks once, and I didn't mind the work or the people, just the fact that they lied about my starting wage and wouldn't fix my paychecks (the place was going into debt).  Now I'm working in the prepared foods department of a health-food grocery store, which isn't a restaurant, but I still make pizzas and work in a kitchen.  I'm really happy working for this corporation (good benefits, interesting people, not a lot of work).  So try to talk to the employees before you start to get an idea of the work environment.

As for busing, no, do NOT start out busing because in a lot of cases, you'll never move up.  The restaurants I've worked at, the bussers stay bussers and the dishwashers stay dishwashers until they quit.  Establish yourself early on, cook or serve.  If you serve, sometimes the shifts are dead and you leave with $30, but other times (Friday nights) are insanely busy and you leave with a couple hundred.  Cooks get a steady paycheck, so it tends to just about even out.  For you, I'd suggest cooking because in your original post, you made it sound like you don't deal with people so well (and people can suck when it comes to their food).

And as for:
Quote:

i cook, it sucks you get burned + the girls you work with are usually gross

Yea, you get burned or cut and you smell gross at the end of a shift (regardless of which position you hold), but you'll be fine if you're careful and shower afterwards.  And IME, I've only met a handful of unattractive women in the business.  There are at least 5 attractive ladies I work with that I can think of right off the bat.  So if that's important to you, check out the employees before you start.

Good luck! :fancycook:

working at a restaurant is fun. especially if you have a good crew.

were you thinkin about being a server or working in the kitchen?

Being a server is fun. you'll get a few tables that suck, but for the most part it's ok.

but i wouldn't suggest making it your only source of income.

then it'll become stressful.
