hmm... horticultural grade works fine for me

But i like buying things in person and only order online if its the only way i can get something ie. spores or wicked cool shoes they don't stock at our half assed excuse for a mall

sorry for the rant, but i'd call around to garden supply stores first

Oh god ive called everywhere. I thought I found a place and drove and drove like 40 minutes to get there only to find it was horticultural grade. I WAS SO FUCKING PISSED, seeing as how the stupid bitch on the phone said it was like pebbles and not like sand (because the dumbass didnt know it comes in different grades and i had to explain it in childrens terms). Believe me i would rather find it in person too. Anyways theres no way around it, I need to order it.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Vermiculte is used with gas fireplaces, since it doesn't burn - you should try local fire place suppliers or whatever the fuck you call 'em.

Yeah, why specifically has horticultural grade not been working for you? How are you using it? It seems to work for most people.

I bought the wrong stuff one time, the fine verm. worked fine for me, but I perfer the coarser verm.
So you dont have to buy so much you could always order some coarse stuff then mix it half and half with the finer verm. works fine IMO.

Its working but its working waaaay to slow. The horticultural grade verm colonization time is killing me. I inoculated my first set of jars, on 11/19 and they're still at like 75%. Im hoping the medium grade helps with the colonization time.

If not why are you putting verm in your jars?

half pints. doing cakes for some, spawning to coir for some. have some half pints of bird seed to that will be spawned to coir. if this mycelium ever gets to 100% colonization.

I doubt the type of verm you are using is the reason for slow colonization. Incorrect moisture content, no gas exchange and packing the verm down tight can slow down colonization considerably. I nearly always used horticultural verm (Home Depot 4cu ft brown bag with red writing) and never noticed much, if any difference in colonization times.

Horticultural grade is what you want.  Check your moisture content and gas exchange if colonization is slow. Also check that you used fresh brf, not old stale stuff. I use fine verm and pf cakes colonize easily in two to three weeks.

you should try pint jars with cooked brown rice by itself... from my results all i can say is "HOLY SHIT" i've got fully colonized jars using LC in 7 days and thats ALL NUTRIENTS =] kind of expensive but still worth every penny :wink:and spawning with whole rice is amazingly easy. Some added vegetable oil helps to prevent the brown rice grains from sticking .

cheers,

Well the 3:1:1 jars are going very slow. And the 2:1:1 jars are moving a little faster but not much. I bought my BRF from wild oats, its already in flower form. Should i make my own BRF? How do i check for gas exchange? The verm i have is like sand, thats horticultural right?

They also have decent-sized bags near the gas fireplace accessories, for $7.

2:1:1 is the ratio I always stuck to. Yes, make your own BRF. It's as fresh as it gets. Get a little coffee grinder from KMart/Walmart/Thrift store and use it to grind whole brown rice from your grocery store. Just make sure the brown rice you buy list only brown rice as the ingredient and nothing else. The horticultural verm is pretty fine, but sand? There should be some slightly larger pieces mixed in with the sandy stuff, maybe about the size of a small piece of perlite. It should look like "fat" sand. As far as gas exchange goes, you should have holes in your lids with a dry top vermiculite layer in your jar. If so, take any tape or foil you have covering the holes off so that the CO2 can escape. If there is no dry verm layer, then you'll need to cover the holes with Tyvek or micropore tape.

Also, did you pack the jars down or leave the substrate pretty loose in the jars?

Holes are in the lids with nothing obstructing them. Alot of my dry verm has fallen down the sides of the jars (pissing me off). Jars were made pretty loose but may have packed down a little. Im really just sick of waiting. I mean I know you have to have patience with this hobby, but one month and the jars still aren't colonized is a bit frustrating.  :banghead:

I would start over with some fresh BRF and a 2:1:1 ratio. If the dry verm is falling down the sides, the substrate has shrunken and likely doesn't have enough moisture to finish. Watch the RogerRabbit video on YouTube showing the BRF/Verm jars. It gives you detailed step-by-step directions.

Seen it. I have 2:1 ratio jars and theyre goin at about the same speed. maybe the BRF isnt as fresh as it could be. So lets say they dont colonize fully, I just bought a bale of coir and have enough to play around with. should i just spawn the uncolonized jars to the coir and see what happens? Or is that a bad idea?

Like sand? What kind of sand? powdery like? I should be fine but not powdery.

Take ten or twelve differently sized pieces and measure them and tell us.

Bad idea. Only spawn fully colonized brf or grains to bulk.

The pic is bad quality but if I can see the grains of verm even in that photo I doubt it is too fine.

Your water content is probably off.
