Niacin
    #7764408 - 12/16/07 01:05 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, I believe Wiccan Seeker made a post a while back about Niacinamide and it's effects on GABA. Anyways I bought some Niacin today that's contained in 100 mg tablets. I took one with some food but got an uncomfortable burning sensation. My questions are as follows
1)Is Niacinamide the same as Niacin?
2)How high should I dose for anti-anxiety effects?
3)Should I have bought instead the no-flush version?

I have no idea how to answer your question, but I'll try. If you want to combat anxiety then take a full B-vitamin complex. Niacin is only one of the B-vitamins. Best to have all then just one, I think?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niacin#Toxicity

"Facial flushing is the most commonly-reported side-effect.[9] It lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes, and is sometimes accompanied by a prickly or itching sensation. This effect is mediated by prostaglandins and can be blocked by taking 300 mg of aspirin half an hour before taking niacin, or by taking one tablet of ibuprofen per day. Taking the niacin with meals also helps reduce this side-effect. After 1 to 2 weeks of a stable dose, most patients no longer flush. Slow- or "sustained"-release forms of niacin have been developed to lessen these side-effects."

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Niacin actually makes me kinda nervous and out of it. I wouldn't reccomend it for anxiety.

I wish there was a natural herb that treated anxiety, but to date, Xanax is the only thing that has made a difference imo.

Thank god I took that aspirin 30 minutes prior or I'd be dying right now lol

Oh BTW, here
wiccan seeker talks about how 100 mg Niacin is equivalent to 1-2 mg diazepam(Valium) which I thought was interesting.

The flushing is way down now, the effect is noticeable as well. I can't really explain it. I just feel warm and a little drowsy.

With 500 mg I definitely noticed a sedative effect. I'm going to try 1000 mg next.

Niacinamide is not the same thing as niacin. Niacinamide should not produce the vascular / flushing effects that niacin produces.
About "non-flushing niacin" (from wikipedia): "While this form of niacin does not cause the flushing associated with the nicotinic acid form, it is not clear whether it is pharmacologically equivalent in its positive effect."
