landsnorkler's Incredible Tropical Shroom Adventure "2008" Winter In Kauai
    #7768113 - 12/17/07 01:05 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everybody, got in to Kauai last night. It's fucking great to be here!!! Truly is paradise. So, I got up this morning at sunrise and went for a jog around the hotel. About 5 minutes into the jog I end up in this big, super sexy field. I'm glancing at the ground of course (myco addicted), and lo and behold I see something familiar. Panaeolus Subbalteatus, the most common active mushroom I find in Montana, hanging out by my left foot in Kauai. Pretty cool. So, I memorize the spot and keep running, looking out for any others. A little up the way I see an entoloma species. Then I veer up onto the main street and try to pull my gaze away from the amazing scenery around me to look at lawns. Didn't see any more mushrooms until almost back to the room, when I saw some coprinus or coprinellus. So, I grabbed the camera and headed back out.

Sunrise, the day begins:

This is who woke me up (thanks):

Coprinus or coprinellus:

Panaeolus Subbalteatus growing from what I believe was decomposing grass clippings, deposited between a mowed section and unmowed field:

They were growing all down the line you can see cutting diagonally across. Grass clippings were deposited along this line:

More tomorrow!!!

Thanks !!!  It truly was an amazing first day.  Love how it's winter where I'm from and down here it feels like it's always an endless summer.  So many cool things.  Geckos, crabs, exotic plants.  Ggreatone, I did go snorkeling yesterday.  Not on mushrooms, but that is something I want to  do.  Only problem is the water seems to be a bit murky right now.  That would be fucking great though!!!

Well, it's day 2, and I got up at sunrise again for a mushroom exploration run, and holy shit,  I've already found copelandia cyanescens!!!  I'm so stoked.  I was running up a river valley, on a busy road.  As I worked my way up I saw a beautiful pasture on my right.  I just couldn't resist.  So, despite the cars that had an easy view of me, and the farm complex I could see in the distance I climbed over a completely overgrown fence.  The grass was much taller than me, and there was a deep layer of dead grass under my feet.  But then I came out into the area that had been grazed.  I started seeing some fairly fresh cow paddies chilling on the ground.  Some had tiny little coprinus growing on them.  I was a little nervous, so I wasn't completely focused.  Toward the farmhouse I could see that a truck was heading down a road running perpendicular to me.  I thought for sure he saw me and was going to come harass me.  There was thick vegetation all around me though, which helped to calm me down a bit.  So I kept walking around, trying to stay fairly hidden.  And then...I saw something my mind knew.  A pattern ingrained into my brain.  Copelandia Cyanescens erupting from a well decomposed cow pie.  Beautiful specimens.  Some, about six inches tall.  Unluckily, I didn't have my camera, so I picked them.  One already had some beautiful blue on the mycelium around the base.  I was estatic.  I wanted to do a shroom dance right there, but I figured I should probably sneak out of there with what I had.  So, back to the road I went, shrooms in hand.  I grabbed an empty styrofoam cup off the side of the road and dropped the goods in there.  Beautifully, I made it back home safely, and even found another subb on the way, in a new location.  So far I have mostly seen active shrooms.  Pretty incredible.  I'll post pics this evening of the picked cyanescens.  And tomorrow morning I'm bringing the camera straight to that magic pasture I stumbled upon.  Well I'm off to go landsnorkeling in the mountains.  Peace!!!

Mimosa sensitiva-the leaves on this thing curl up when touched.  Fucking sick!!!  But it is a weed from Brazil:(

Cactu- Aloha buddy (I had to say it)!!! I think the field where they were found was cleared of trees some time ago, and has been overtaken with grasses, and morning glories. It is right by the beach, and between my hotel, and another one, so people walk along its edge. The edge closest the beach is mowed for gringos like me. And the clippings are deposited along a line separating the mowed from unmowed. The bigger subbs were back in the the taller grasses, and smaller subbs out in the mowed. But all were right near that line. So far this has been a dream come true. Actives on the first two days. Day one subbs, day 2 copes!!! You would love it here my man.

Mm, sounds like the Blue Meanies made you hop that fence.. they can do that to people.. they wanted to be rescued..

Remember, there could be a whole dump-truck full of Copelandia's in that field calling your name, but not a single one of them would be worth getting busted over.. or wrestled to the ground by a loco Hawaiian native shroom-field owner :chuckles:

Trespassing into a Copelandia pasture simply just is not worth the risks involved for me, anymore. No matter how mouth-watering they could be, no matter how sweetly and subliminally they whisper their songs to you, it is wise to control their calls within your soul unless you talk with the farmer first. If there is no farmer there, then I usually would not cross the fence. Especially along a busy road !

Maybe if I was in Mexico or Thailand, picking with cactu or Mj, then I would feel safe about it. But not in any United States fields I don't trespass for shrooms, anymore.

Those subbalteatus are looking shroomier to me than any "stolen" Copelandia's.. with the subbs, it is a completely smoother and safer enviroment and experience to collect the magic..

Hack yes though man, I am excited to see the collection of Copes you made. You have an excellent digital camera too btw. Stunning images. Tropical lighting. Good vibes on those subbalteatus shots..

:mushroom2:

Edit: My 7,000th post at the shroomery was another nastalgic lesson about the seductor, lady copelandia. heheha

I just clicked back on this topic to read cactu's response to the shrooms, and i looked at the date seeing 2007.. and I thought "wtf", thinking it was already 200&8 for some reason.. moral of the story, Landsnorkels tropical shroom photographs sent me into some sort of time-warp.. hahah! - everyone rate LS five-shrooms for walking down the center-line of a golden road paved with Panaeolus mushrooms. Transporting shroomers through magical time-warp tunnels again..exercising magical powers of superior reasoning upon all who view this incredibly vibalicious shroom adventure. Don't eat too many of them though, or you might come back to Montana and change your screenname to LandSnorkelerTheGGreat. Complete and utter shroominess. I'm stickying this topic for the remainder of your vacation.

Whewy, just got back from a great hike. Found lots of cool shrooms. Some really nice ones with volvas. A toad, and an orb spider also.

Anyway, onto the copes. I'm going to head back there tomorrow morning with my camera!!! This time I feel I should ask the farmer. That would not be cool to get busted in paradise. Can't be too greedy. Thanks GGreatone for reminding me. I'm glad you can be a part of my trip too!!! Day 1-subbs, day 2-copes, day 3-voyeur cope porn!!! This evening I'll post the copelandia shots, and other tropical shrooms from my hike. Thanks for the extra special vibes Cactu. I feel them brother.

Oh yeah, Wowitch, I figured they lost potency, because of how much they blue. But I assume they are still worth eating when a little bit dry. I'd like to save em for a little bit later in the trip. Is this worth it? Thanks. They are so beautiful!!!
Peace!!!

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus.
All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the
octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV.
But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns.
Also he got a race car.
Is any of this getting through to you?

Cope time!!! These pictures arn't that great. But these are the first pics I've taken of copelandia cyanescens, and hopefully not the last. So, I'm excited, to say the least. I couldn't upload all of the pictures from today, because the connection keeps cutting out here, but I've got some pics from todays hike. There were some cool shrooms out there today. These were found growing with ironwood, and some other kind of tree, I think some kind of locus. I need to do some research on the trees. We started on a dryer side of this mountain, and then worked our way into wetter country. The trees began to change, and mushrooms became more abundant. We ended up on the top of a 1000 foot mountain, overlooking the area we're staying in, and looking inward toward the wettest spot on earth, Mt. Wai'ale'ale, which recieves over 400 inches of rain a year (rains all the time up there). The clouds are brought in by the tradewinds from the northeast, and release their moisture as they slam into the island. Perfect environment for sustained mushroom growth!!!

Copelandia cyanescens:

From the hike
Mountain we hiked up:

Toad from the journey:

First shrooms, I'm not very familiar with any of the shrooms I found, but I think these are lepiotoid:

No idea. I can't tell if it's sponge or just really crinkled up gills. If they are gills, then I'm thinking galerina. Otherwise, no idea.

Not sure, maybe pholiota:

These seemed to be the most fungally popular trees:

I like these:

I really like these. Some type of amanita or volvariella:

They were growing mainly with these ironwoods:

View from the top:

random view from hike:

Well that was a pleasant day. I'm worn out. Finding all these shrooms is making me drowsy. First thing tomorrow I will be going out for a beautiful mornin of copelandia herding. I'm printing the beauties I have now for further "studying" upon my return to Mantana.
Peace!!!
