safe deposit boxes
    #7767940 - 12/16/07 11:37 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Does anyone have one?

What do you need to open one? do you have to already have an account with the bank? or do you just need a photo ID?

Just how safe are they? I've heard of things being stolen by bank employees...

Anyone with personal experience using a bank safe deposit box, and knows the logistics of getting one, chime on in...

I've had one, just needed a driver's license.

Banks I'm faimilar with don't even have access to the boxes short of breaking in, as most are on a two-key system, where the bank has one, and you have another.

I knew someone who managed the bank's boxes, and they couldn't open it unless they hired a locksmith to drill the box (which was only done if you didn't pay your bill for a LOOONG time or the bank got served with a warrant). My friend only saw two warrants his whole time there (around ten years) both were from the IRS.

I don't see how that is possible. As johnm214 said, every single one that I have seen requires two keys; the bank keeps one and the customer the other. The banks don't have spare keys and require a locksmith to open the box if a key is lost or unavailable.

i don't see how it's possible, either... i've just read of some incidents on line while reading around about getting a box.

john:  just a driver's license?  that's good to know...

You should know, that if you are using it to store say.. Cash... if you are busted for anything illegal, and the box is in your name, or they can prove you have access to it (listed at the bank) they can and will seize the contents.

Also, some banks have waiting lists to get one, some don't as there aren't a lot open someitmes. So be prepared to wait, or open a new account at another bank (both banks i have require an account)

That's all I needed.  Things might have changed w/ teh patriot act, which introduces all sorts of fun ways to make dealing with banks even more painful

i know this..

if i get one for myself, it will be for storing documents and that's it.

if one were to ever get one for storing cash, it would be best to use a very well-made "novelty" ID, right?  if it only requires an ID.  I could see it requiring more than just a photo ID since 9/11, though.. probably a second form of ID at least..

i have one. needed a liscense.
they had two keys. one is a masters key that goes to all boxes in the room, and one key goes only to my box.
they gave me the one that only goes to my box so there is no chance that they can get in it.
just dont loose the key or they have to make a new one and it costs about 50 bucks.

I don't see how that is possible. As johnm214 said, every single one that I have seen requires two keys; the bank keeps one and the customer the other. The banks don't have spare keys and require a locksmith to open the box if a key is lost or unavailable.

A few years ago a friend of mine got pissed off at his bank for some absurd service charges on his checking account. To get even, he leased a safe deposit box and put a fish in it.

A few days later, the entire bank reeked of rotting fish. Unable to identify which box the smell was coming from, they just had to live with it until the fish dried up and stopped stinking.

Moral of the story: even the bank can't open your box without both your key and the bank's unless they get a locksmith to drill out the lock.

No. Your personal key and the bank's are BOTH required to open it.

If you are going to open up a safety deposit box, you ought to ensure that it is NOT UNDER YOUR NAME. If you are planning on keeping bail money or something like that in there, it's pretty important that you get a family member, friend, whatever to register it under their name.

If you ever get iced out for cultivation or distribution the police can and WILL seize EVERYTHING tied to you as proceeds of crime. They'll empty your bank account, so it stands to reason that they'd empty your safety deposit box aswell.

good luck.

I haven't quite gotten used to the way that threads are "threaded" here, I meant to just post a general reply in the topic  though I see this topic is stale as hell.
