No dont roll in perlite.
Perlite is for humidification, it provides a large surface area for water to evaporite providing good humidity.
Vermiculite holds water like a sponge providing a reservour like thing for moisture (which is ideal conditions for pinnin)
Both are non nuitricious so should not be a vector for contamination, but verm is better for casing and perlite for humidifications.
they should not be substituted.

thbats perfectly fine, i have done this on a few cakes. Be sure to keep the humidity as high as you can as its important to have high humidity at the surface of the mycelium (which is why we roll in verm and keep it moist)
You might find that it pins from the bottom, i have had decent flushes from a non rolled cake. dunk and roll for the 2nd flush. You may see better pinning (i did last grow)
Either way, given that you are giving plenty of FAE good humidity and light, they will pin.

dave, Why dont you just dunk and roll one in perlite just to see??? Maybe you are onto something and maybe people who say no are ust repeating something that they do not know if it is true or not. I say do one. BTW, perlite is like sand once in your mouth. So you will want to pick it all off of the stems

aight ill give it a shot, maybe the extra surface area will create more surface area for humidity to collect and feed the myc? who knows

Well I'm not entirely sure that this is the reason. . .
But. . .
I have a couple cakes fruiting and they weren't getting any pins for over a week and a half. Well I don't know if it was a coincidence or not but one day my fc was pushed a little too hard and a bit of perlite was brushed against the bottom of my cakes and stuck. The cakes pinned the same day.
Could have been due to the increase in humidity at the base?

The purpose of the 'roll' in dunk and roll is so that vermiculite will stick to the wet cake. Vermiculite absorbs water and therefore acts as a moisture reservoir. You can mist the verm on the cake and it will slowly release that absorbed water to the mycelium.
Perlite does not absorb water. Perlite is crystalline and is about as absorbant as window glass. Putting perlite on your cakes will not serve as a moisture reservoir or anything else.
