I'm 99% sure it's Agaricus campestris as they grow a lot in my yard, but nothing this big. If it's not campestris it's something similar but I know it's Agaricus.
I just thought i'd share because they grow a lot in my yard but 1. never in the front 2. never this big
I will post a pic in the morning

If it's as big as your hand you can pretty much bet that it's not A. campestris. That species maxes out at about 3 inches across. Of course, if your hand is only about 3 inches across then you can disregard all this.
An interesting sounding find, though.
Happy mushrooming!

They're common here and have a cool silvery cap if you catch them at the right time.

I've never cooked it up, but I will if I find some nice ones this year.

Can I chime in?
I don't think that is a pluteus. Volvariella maybe? sp. speciosa perhaps. (emphasis on the 'volva') If you look at the hole that was left, you should be able to see a sack like structure that it came out of.
I came across some farmland a few months ago and when the sun hit the field right, you could see hundreds of shimmering caps throughout the field. Maybe I can dig up a photo...
By the way, they are still edible. Apparently they are often used in south-east Asian cooking. Peculiar taste, they take some getting used to. Kind of peanutty to me.

Thanks for the clarification. I was referring to Volvariella speciosa, but looking back on my post I can see it was confusing.
