leaving jars incubating for a long time without checking them?
    #7766193 - 12/16/07 04:09 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

ok so I have about 30 pint rye jars incubating and colonizing very well in my apt
inoculated last week and amazing growth already

my question:
I am home for the holidays and left the jars at my apartment
if I leave them in there even after they are fully colonized for a period of time (like two weeks) will they still be ok? or will the mycelium become stung out or something?

I think I may check up on them in a few weeks and unplug incubator for the 2 remaining weeks so the colonization slows, thats if they are close to fully colonized

any input greatly appreciated

also - RR - you gave me some great tips on soaking/boiling rye. this is my 3rd time around with rye and finally got hydration down right thanks to your help.

now just gotta master spawning to coir with added coffee grounds, plan on doing it at a 50:50 ratio just so I'm 100% it wont screw up on me even though 1:4 is the standard

If you are worried you can put them in the fridge to stall them for the week.

I would take them out of the incubator if you are going to be gone that long. Otherwise, Mystique is right.. if you feel you need to slow growth to be safe, you can toss them in the fridge. However, be warned that they may take longer to get going again after being refrigerated.

well I have a roommate that can check on them and I can drive down whenever I really need to
I guess I'll check on em in two weeks and just take them out after that

Or you can keep ur apt super cold - like 60-65 degrees. I've seen the results of leaving a bunch of jars in the incubator too long and it's fucking terrible. The fridge would work well too it would stall growth completely though.

or you could just turn off the incubator. Wow what an idea.
They will be fine at room temp. I wouldnt fridge them, You do want them to be fully colonized by the time you get back right?

With mine they were in my martha at room temperature. i went on a vaca and came back and it was like a sauna in my room. I knew i was fucked right when i walked in the door. lol. So, make sure you have your thermostat set correctly if ur gonna leave em at "room temp".

yes thats what I plan on doing once I check on them in a few weeks.
by then they should be around 75% colonized and then for the two weeks with incubator unplugged it should time out nicely

thanks for everyones input
