Aerial Rhizo growth, no pins.
    #7765705 - 12/16/07 02:02 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

Crazy aerial rhizos, right through and above my casing layer, around 10 days already, but no pins.

I'm trying to fruit tubs of straight rye in a martha with an agar-style carboy humidifier.

I've grown with success in years past, the only variable I can attribute to my lack of pinning is the fact that I had my fluorescent on the same cycle timer as I had the humidifier on (45 secs on, 5 mins off.)

Would this be enough to stunt pinning, or should I look elsewhere for an explanation?

Is the rye cased?

Yep, 50/50 ph adjusted.

The mycelium completely ignored it,and threw out an army of aerial rhizo growth up and over the casing.

just wait and see. I've had casings take up to and even a little past 2 weeks to start pinning (with aerial rhizos). How often do you mist your casing layer? Pics?

Doesn't really look like the pic.

I get a full FAE every 5 mins, humidity stays at 99%+ constantly.

Imagine scores of plump q-tips, shooting vertically from the casing layer. I've plucked one, smelled and tasted it, definitely cubensis mycelium.

No digicam to speak of unfortunately.

doesnt sound like hyphal knots. Sounds like mycelium that is fanningout above the cashing layer. This is not something to get excited about. This is not ideal.

Are spraying your casings with water?

Leave your light on ten to twelve hours per day for best results. Mycelium has been shown to have a circadian rhythm, just like mammals.

Aerial rhizos often form when the mycelium is healthy and rapidly growing. It won't be long and the mycelium will settle down and pin.

WOW, that might be beyond just regular rhizo myc. I expected you to show a pic like this one:

Hopefully someone with more knowledge/experience can lead you in the right direction. I myself have never encountered this problem. Good luck!

So whats the call?

1. Scratch?
2. Recase?
3. Leave them be?

I have two quarts worth of straight grain in these plate things, been in there for about 10 days.

I have a a 6 quart rye tray next to these, from the same mother LC, just put it in this morning.

I had similar style of growth on a cake once..not to that extreme though, and it ended up contaminating shortly afterwards.

Here's what mine looked like
