Smelly Rye Grain Jar Question

i have started my first attempt at rye grain jars using two pint jars. colonization seems to be moving along fine and there are no signs of contamination in either jar.i cut a 3/4 inch diameter hole in the lids and used a double layer of tyvek butt...one of the jars on closer inspection smells of fermentation. is this a FAE problem? is this normal?

Using two, one pint jars, or using jars which contain two pints?

dude Nibin is an asshole.
if its a very strong mushroomy and digested rye smell you should be fine. if you take a whiff right after you transfer grain you will notice a strong smell.

hmm, as long as you have no visible contaminations or slimes you should be ok. beer is made using grain and such, so im sure the smells are similar. i use the same tyvek method even though i only use 1 disk and never contam. youll be fine

i soaked the rye for 24 hours then simmered it then pressure cooked it and it doesn't smell like dirty socks or burnt bacon. the rye in the jars actually looked a little dry butt i don't really know what it is supposed to look like. colonization is going good so i think i am in good shape.

There was a reason behind my question.
If a amount of colonizing substrate is too thick the middle can go anaerobic and go bad. It happens all the time with people who make their substrate layer too thick.
EDIT: Still half asleep. 2 pints = 1 Quart (damn you non metric system users) and most people use quart jars for grains, so amount of substrate (going anaerobic) isn't going to be a problem.
Imperial measuring system still has it's hidden secrets for me.

did you get a chance to read the forum rules before making this post? while we're all adults here it's sometimes better to use a bit of caution when posting. there is forum for flaming and other less civilized behavior

while it's a little late for this go-round, I recommend using quart jars for grains, most PCs can handle a quart, if you fit gallon jars in your PC go that route, you'll be happier with the results

small is cool, you'll see my meaning when you do it again, seems I always need a bigger PC.
in response to this he rye in the jars actually looked a little dry butt i don't really know what it is supposed to look like.
if it looks a little dry then it's probably perfect, sounds like you're doing everything just fine
