Common uses for pressure cookers?
    #7764780 - 12/16/07 10:00 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

My mom's got a pressure cooker in her house somewhere that she doesn't use much, and I'm actually pretty sure it's an AA. So I want to ask her to borrow it, but obviously saying "to sterilize substrates for my mycology hobby" requires a little more explanation that I would want to give.

So my question is, what the heck kind of normal food items require a pressure cooker? I cook all the time, so if I have a food-related explanation, I'm sure she'd let me borrow it. Thoughts?

Making jelly (the stuff you you make sandwiches with)

You buy gelling sugar at a well-stocked food place, mix it with lets say mashed strawberries or other fruit on a low fire, you put it in jars and give it a 1 hour PC cook and presto: little jars of all-natural strawberry jam

Make some of those too and give em to your mother. She'll volunteer to let you use her PC as often as you'd like, provided the goodies keep on coming.

You could possibley use it while she's not around.
Maybe bring it to a friend's place and use it there?

A pressure cooker cuts down the cooking time of corned beef by quite a bit.

Canning anything for long term storage.  The pressure cooker I use was an AA that was my mom's and she used it for pear preserves mostly.  She also canned some spicy pickles, green beans, and other shit.  She used to have a pretty nice sized garden so she used it quite a bit, but doesn't anymore.

I got it from her by telling her I was growing button mushrooms.
