just wondering if is possible for san pedro cactus to grow in Australia? there is a house not far from me that has some cactus that looks exactly the same as san pedro (as far as i know). is there any major things that distinguish it from others (besides the alkaloid content)

of course, there are shit loads of people growing all types of cacti in australia... your going to have to familiarise yourself with the tell tale signs of trichocereus species, to the untrained eye alot of cacti species look similar... i know that theres a hell of alot of cereus species growing over there and they are often mistaken for trichocereus species... perhaps u could get a photo of the cacti u have seen and post it here for identification... or go and ask the owner wot it is and perhas they will give u a cutting

Whatever you do dont rip it off - as suggested above, chat to the owner and you could get a karma free cutting to grow of your own.

I vote for Pedro.
Like was previously mentioned, best to talk to the owner. Many are happy to give a cutting if you talk to them first, but everyone hates being stolen from.

But if the owner won't give you a cutting, then he will know who stole one.

You can't tell them apart? Time to do alot of research. One is really glaucous with red spines (3 per areloe) around 1 inch apart that looks nothing like a trich.(Nice grafting stock you have though) The other would have 5-7 light brown spines seperated by 3/4inch. That looks somewhat like a trich. To point out some small differences.
Yes, cacti love the melb weather. One of the most prime spots in Aus to grow em. It looks like the ownwer of the trich has taken a pup from the front of that plant also. Ask em for a cut, if they say no, keep looking.

i have found the best way to identify the trichocereus species all together is to order a pedro from an online vendor, from there on out its not really difficult for you to pick the right ones at local stores, or at least this is how it has worked for me, i can now tell a trichocereus species *almost* 100% from a fair distance.

could be a T. scopicolus also, considering its australia. however it has a shinier skin then scop so probably a T. pachnoi. nice find. looks like the owner may know what he is growing there also.

Hey man is that cactus from bunnings? looks like it. They do often have some Trichocereus scopulicolis in stock. Heres a few I found there.

I hear they contain nice amounts of the goodies too.
