Germinating is when the spores first turn into mycelium I think (something like that) and can take several days even in perfect conditions, longer in alot of cases. Once mycelium has formed it can spread very quick. When I put spore solution into honey water its 2 or 3 days before I see mycelium. When I put mycelium solution in honey water I have seen growth in just a few hours.
The bit I like is that you can innoculate hundreds of jars with one spore print or syringe, maybe I'm just a tight bastard.

I used a spore print from homestead to innoculate agar. It took around a week to see visible growth. I think it took this long because the spores were dry and the air had very low humidity (Tuscon, AZ). For 1/2 pint PF jars I used a PF classic spore syringe and by the third day I had mycelium patches the size of nickels. Germination rate depends on growing conditions and whether or not the spores are hydrated and fresh.

Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.

Well, to go real old school, here is a tried and proven recipie for whole brown rice. Use pint jars Whole Brown Rice Water 1/4 cup uncooked Whole Brown rice 1/3 to 1/2 cup water Fill each jar with 1/4 water, 1/3-1/2 Whole Brown rice Put the lids on rubberside up and loose. Pressure cook for 45 minutes at 15 psi. Let cool ONLY til the point of the seal breaking on the pressure cooker. Its going to be hot Now tighten the lids and shake the rice cake up. Then let cool in clean area Innoculate with Spore water If you let the jars cool before shaking them, the cakes will congel together. I realize you wanted a cake method, but this (even though old school) recipie works, You will still get a cake, but it wont be a pretty cake, or go ahead and break it up and innoculate. bluhoney
