Why is my vermiculite filter always wet?
    #7762268 - 12/15/07 03:51 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Everytime I PC my jars my vermiculite filter is always wet? I put my jars in with foil over the top and a large rubber band around it to seal it tighter. I have gotten a few jars contaminated from the wet verm. I have started putting my jars in the oven on 300 degrees F for two 10 minute cycles. It dries out my verm filter nicely. Am I doing something wrong for my filter to be wet?

I even bought extra lids with no holes and my vermiculite was steamed wet. I tried using less water and my substrate was too dry. I guess Im stuck oven dry cooking after.

Elevate the jars totally out of the water when you steam them. Another cause of the verm getting damp is not making it thick enough. Don't fill with brf past the start of the threaded area. Reserve that last 3/4" for the dry verm. Remove foil immediately after the jars cool.

I only fill them to right below the thread line them I added verm. So I did that part right. I filled my PC to 3/4 of the jar with water now I know where I screwed up. Thanks for the info.
