I doubt it.. It has been proven myth that marijuana destroys brain cells and I think alzheimers is loss of memory..

But Im not a scientist so I wouldnt know

That is a lie. I hesitate to call it a myth because I've never heard of it.

Actually, there have been studies showing that weed protects brain cells...

http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/10/14/100404.php

Plus, I've heard other places that it can reduce the risk for alzheimers... don't have any links for that, though...

EDIT: there you go, thcan, that's what I was referring to...

Just, smoke more.  :bongload:

Recently, my grandfather on my dad's side passed away after 86 years of being the best grandfather ever. Although I loved him dearly, his death was not the depressing death-in-the-family experience that often occurs. For me, he had left us several years ago.

My grandfather suffered from advanced stages of Alzheimer's, a progressive brain disorder that steadily destroys a person's memory and ability to learn, reason and communicate. He was hospitalized for the final years of his life because of the severity of his condition, for which there is no cure.

Another fun attribute of Alzheimer's is that, according to the American Health Assistance Foundation, "all offspring in the same generation have a 50/50 chance of developing [it] if one of their parents had it."

And that means my dad is right in the gun sights of this depressing condition.

Luckily, the Scripps Research Institute in California has published some new research indicating that a cure may be hidden in an unlikely - and hilarious - source.

As my good friend Snoop Dogg might say, a tonic might be found in some bubonic chronic. That's right, the active ingredient in marijuana may reduce inflammation and deposits in the brain, and thus prevent the mental decline associated with Alzheimer's.

If you have any experience with reefer enthusiasts, this may seem highly dubious, or at the very least, counterintuitive.

"Hey," you say, "but my roommate can't remember expletive for anything."

To which I rejoin, "Shut up! It's science!"

Now that I have this information, exactly how can I broach this subject with my father - other than publishing my intentions in a student newspaper read by both of my parents (Hi, Mom).

I figure it begins with a flushed disclaimer explaining that I have no experience with drugs because I am the picture of a well-raised, above-the-influence son. And then, after their resulting panic attack and requisite rifling through my possessions for "all the pots," a real discussion can begin.

Should I convince them, I think my larger concern is what my father would be like as a habitual ganja user. I mean, he grew up in the early '60s and '70s, but in New Zealand, and as such I doubt he ever experimented.

I think of some of my friends and what they're like: hungry, free-associating, layabouts with silly grins and messy apartments. My dad is one of those people who loves his job to death, so I don't think I have to worry about the lazy bit. But the free-associating humor might be slightly unsettling.

As a professor of chemistry - who is, probably as we speak, talking someone's ear off about the periodic table - I can only imagine what he'd be like flying high. "You know, the isomeric properties of proteins, especially when you consider the knowledge accumulated from X-ray crystal structures that have been used to make resonance assignments for the amino acid side chains of dihydrofolate reductase, are a lot like that one episode of 'Friends' where Chandler was all like going crazy when he met Ursula, you know, Phoebe's twin. I mean, if you understand the underlying principles governing isomer sets and if Ursula had a goatee … um, if you think about it."

And, well, I love him, but he already tells too many bad jokes. I can tolerate it now, but I've dealt with many a high friend that thinks he is funny when he really isn't. Sometimes, you need to tell him, in no uncertain terms and very often impolitely, to stop talking. I'm not sure I could muster the necessary vitriol to ensure my father's silence, and thus I would be forced to grin politely and suffer.

On the pro side, he has really good taste in biscuits and jams. His music, while dated, is good, and this might convince him to invest in a decent stereo for our home. And we don't have to worry about a messy house, because that's a woman's job anyway, LOL.

In all seriousness, if something as simple as getting my father intoxicated was all I had to do to save him from his father's fate, I would have already arranged for him to receive a monthly supply.

And if this research, when completed, proves that marijuana does prevent Alzheimer's, it would be great news for the youngest of our generation. In fact, this might just be the only positive aspect of the Bush administration's legacy.

While the Government Accountability Office says drug use has declined among the youth of America, they also say that this year's $120 million ad campaign aimed at discouraging kids from doing weed might actually be responsible for an increase in marijuana usage among 12- and 13-year-olds.

So, Bush may have saved many of our younger siblings, and they will all be able to remember him fondly well into their 80s.

Arun is surprised that this got published. E-mail him at thefamilyatomics@gmail.com.

The Oregon Health Division has expanded the state's medical marijuana program by adding "agitation of Alzheimer's disease" to the list of qualifying medical conditions, making patients eligible to use state-sanctioned marijuana. Some Alzheimer's patients develop the agitation syndrome, which is defined as the inability to settle down and includes symptoms such as verbal outbursts, pacing, and restlessness, all of which may lead to patient combativeness.

Oregon is one of a handful of states to allow seriously ill people to use marijuana for medical conditions. Measure 67, the successful 1998 initiative allowing medical marijuana use for Oregon residents, already provides for its use in cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, cacheixia, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures and persistent muscle spasms.

Oregon has more than 60,000 Alzheimer's patients, but health officials don't expect an immediate rush to treat the syndrome with marijuana. Typically, doctors prescribe psychoactive drugs to treat the disease. While little research exists on the effects of marijuana on Alzheimer's agitation, the Health Division heard testimony from a seven-member panel of mental health specialists and a patient advocate recommending its inclusion for the syndrome.

But Liz McKinney, executive director of the Oregon Trail Chapter Alzheimer's Association, said her organization is in no rush to promote medical marijuana to treat the syndrome. She told the Portland Oregonian, "It's too early to recommend or deny [the use of marijuana]." McKinney said extensive scientific study was needed to examine both positive and negative effects on marijuana on Alzheimer's agitation. "That clearly has not happened yet, and we really cannot endorse it at this point," she said.

The advisory panel also lobbied to include anxiety and bipolar disorders on the list of approved diseases, but that effort failed.

Under Oregon medical marijuana law, to gain approval from the state Health Division, eligible users need a doctor's written statement supporting the use of the weed. Kelly Page, manager of the state's medical marijuana program, said about 700 people have registered to use medical marijuana since the law went into effect last May. Some 350 physicians have signed medical marijuana statements.

Meanwhile, the group sponsoring this year's Oregon marijuana legalization initiative is suing Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury for his refusal to accept electronic signatures for their petitions. The signatures in question were gathered through <http://www.ballotdirect.com>;.

The Campaign for Restoration of Hemp needs 66,786 signatures by July 7 to qualify for the November ballot. Organizers say they have already collected more than 67,000 signatures and that only a few hundred were gathered electronically. The lawsuit will thus not directly impact the current drive, but is a test case for new technologies.

The initiative, the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act, would allow the state to sell marijuana to patients and to any adult residents through the state liquor store system. The state would be empowered to tax marijuana sales.

In related news, Washington State's Medical Quality Assurance Commission has added diseases that cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and seizures or muscle spasms to the list of conditions qualifying under the state's medical marijuana law, according to the NORML Foundation

sneezing kills brain cells, its not about the cell loss more are just made anyway. my grandmother got alzheimers about 6 months ago and she hasnt ever touched any sort of drug in her life. i think it just comes on naturally from stress or something but i highly doubt that marijuana can be linked to alzheimers.

I doubt weed has any negative effects on your health and am inclined to believe all the stuff about it protecting brain cells and slowing cancer growth, etc. My father is 66 years old and has been smoking tobacco since he was a teenager and probably started smoking weed in his twenties and aside from a smokers cough and some arthritis from working as a carpenter all his life he has absolutly no health problems and is still one hell of a carpenter.

Cannabis does not have any serious negatives effects on its own. It doe mess with short term memory, however. Smoking anything will have adverse effects too.

That stat probably comes from the fact that smoking copious (and I mean COPIOUS) amounts of marijuana out of a plastic bottle and aluminum foil can increase your chances of Alzheimer's. Probably a correlation=causation fact like so many drug rumors.

We all know that cannabis is the worlds most evil drug, even worse than the nazis.

Did you know, each time you smoke skunk (worlds strongest drug according to the daily "we're not lying, honest!" mail) god kills and rapes a nun for eternity.

About as true as, say, the story that if someone slaps you on the back while your eyes are crossed they'll stay that way forever.

Seriously now-

All you have to fuckin' do is look at places where cannabis is a part of everyday life and has been for generations (India, Nepal, South Africa, Jamaica, Laos, etc.) and see if they have any kind of unusual predisposition to Alzheimer's:

No?

There you go. Abracadabra!
