Watering Casings
    #7761614 - 12/15/07 12:19 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

After applying a perfect layer of casing it has begun to fruit. The moisture of the casing is drying though.

When, why, how and should the fruiting casing be moistened?

Thanks for the knowledge,
RevB

im by no means an expert but i've done 2 casings now and, someone correct me if im wrong, with a regular spray bottle lightly mist with 3% h2o2 as needed. u don't want it too wet, but too try isn't good either. use ur judgement. in my 2 attempts at casings, i haven't gotten any contams and my flushes were decent.

What's the significance of the Hydrogen Peroxide?

Dont use h202, it harms mycelium more than it does other moulds and bacteria.

h202 is only helpfull in the fight against a cobweb infection.

Spraying with h202 is more likely to make it easier for contams.

I have never done casings so im not quite sure. All i know that the casing layer should be kept moist.

I've read in different places that H2O2 releases oxygen as it breaks down... I would think that could be useful in someway, maybe fewer fresh air exchanges but i would agree with veda. I've also read posts of RRs stating that H2O2 gets in the way of growth.

H202 does break down into o2 and h20 over a period of time when exposed to light and air, the amounts of each will most likely be negligible, and in most cases the damage to mycelium would be far greater to the benifit of halfing that extra o2 and h20.

There have been reports of sudden outbreaks of contamination which have been traced back to overuse of h202.

If you keep up good FAE then contams should not be a problem (unless you have contaminated spawn or incorectly pasturised susbtrates etc)

i presume they arent spraying 3% h2o2 directly on the mycelium. if it is diluted even to 1/10th its not going to effect the mycelium. i understand what you getting at h2o2 is a waste at that point and expensive. 3% h2o2 would effect the mycelium but i presume anybody who has a head on there shoulders wouldnt do that, or even worse 30%. i agree h2o2 doesnt make up for sloppy work but in dilute ammounts its not going to do much. their probably is enough chlorine in your water to have the effect you want. FAE is what it is all about, especially in preventing contams. good FAE and you will be "what contams, people get contams?".

3% peroxide that has been further diluted ten to one won't even effect cobweb much, so don't bother. Casing layers need to be watered often. Their job is to supply moisture to the substrate during a flush.
