Help with an indoor greenhouse idea

I have this visualization in my mind of a type of cabinet, maybe 48" wide by 36" tall with maybe 3 to 4 shelves and Lexan or glass doors with a 4ft flouro or two mounted on the underside of each shelf. I would also like to have a drip system and/or humidifier incorporated into the design. It would be made of wood, so i would have to select stock that could be used in a damp environment without worry of mildew or rot. Maybe cedar or redwood. The shelves would have to be adjustable so that the could be moved away from the lights as plants grow. Another possibility is to make it a bit wider to incorporate one end with two shelves for slightly taller plants. I think this would be great for growing herbs indoors for kitchen use and maybe a few ethnos. The only problem I'm struggling with is the depth of the greenhouse cabinet. in my mind, I'm only visualizing a depth of about 6". If its much deeper than that it doesnt seem practical with a depth much more than that unless it's going to be a permenant fixture. Sorry for lack of visual aide in this, I haven't put much into the design phase because I have this personality disorder where once I begin on a project I'm committed and gungho from beginning to end.

I took a moment to draw the idea out. Nothing as far as plans yet. However, I'm still not sure about shelf depth. I suppose I could get away with using smaller pots as long as I utilize a method to water frequently. I had thought about a semi-hydroponic setup. Like using small pots and having the pots sitting in 4" PVC pipe split longways. When the plants would need watering, I could turn on a pump and allow water to trickle down the pipes and around the bottoms so they would get wattered from the bottom up.....
