So after getting my friend from the Marines
    #7760066 - 12/14/07 08:37 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

And seeing it all, and talking to him about what it was like and what not, I have seriously started considering joining, or at least joining some branch of the military.

I'm just posting this because I know almost everyone will try and talk me out of it, and if they succeed I won't, if they don't I'll look into it more.

I'm just curious what about his take on the military piqued your interest?

I'm not going to try to talk you out of it. I wanted to join the Navy when I got out of highschool, but back then they were more selective and probably wouldn't have taken me due to some health conditions.

i'll tell you this

my brother joined up after graduating college. if you want to do anything other than basic infantry, it's going to take 1-3 years to get anywhere. not to mention how grueling coursework + exercise/training is; out of the few hundred that start a program, maybe 10% pass

well, he works in an office in iraq filing paper work now

the military is for ppl who want to make a living using their body rather than brains
which is ok since 90% of american jobs dont require any mental skills

That is the dumbest thing I've heard today. I bet half the people in the military are more intelligent than you are.

if you wanna do it, then do it.  you were talking about not wanting to do college... i suppose the military is an alternative.  i personally wouldn't be able to stand it.  the strict hierarchy squashing individuality.  you eat, sleep, breathe when they tell you to.  doesn't seem like an experience i'd want.

Ditto. I totally want to go into battle and get shot at (no bullshit) but I couldn't stand having seven years of my life strictly controlled by people telling me what to do all of the time. If I could go to Iraq for just a year and then be free then I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

Wow you really are an ignorant fuck. The military schools in the USA are some of the most elite schools in the country. You think they let just any jackass fly a billion dollar plane?

Anyway that being said I'm going for my physical in the army here on the 28th (unfortunately I've had to curb some of my excessive drug use haha). The army was my last choice branch wise but no one else would let me come in as an officer and I'm not coming in as a grunt with a college degree.

Jew if you need money the army is offering some pretty ridiculous bonuses right now... If you don't need the money I'd prolly either go marines or AF depending on how strict you can handle shit.

What is it about the military that attracts you?

Do you think the military would necessarily be a better option than pursuing a civilian career?

jewunit,

here's my take.

i think the military is a great opportunity for people who may be in a rough spot or are just really unsure of what they want out of life. they will give you a place to sleep, food, and a decent salary. plus, pay for college.

if you live out in bumb-fuck oklahoma and are more than likely going to inherit your dads feed store. i say military all the way.

Pyrotechnics encompasses demolition. But a career in explosives demolition requires either an engineering or architecture degree (not sure, but it's really a science).

I'd definitely give it serious thought man especially if you don't know what the fuck to do with yourself (as you don't seem to know what to do about school and shit). They'll off your student loans (if you have any) , they'll pay for you're school (if and when you ever want to go back), and you get to see the world (I'm requesting to get stationed in germancy) before you get tied down.

That being said the recruiter will definitely make it sound as good as possible and not tell you about any of the bad shit. Pretty much all the men in my family were or are currently high ranking military officers so I know what I'm getting myself into. I would reccomend talking to all the branches and see what each has to offer. If you have any questions feel free to ask

well some people like it, some people hate it. Just make sure its REALLY what you want to do. Because when you take your oath before boot camp, you are government property. Theres no turning back unless you want to spend time in prison.

Think about it A LOT.

There have been a lot of marines in my family. My father was in for 20 years...he told me theres a lot better things to do in life. But then again some other people I've talked to said that they love it.

If you can get use to the idea of being US government property and being told where to live, how to live, what to do, ect. Then I say go for it. Like I said just make sure its what you really want to do. And keep in mind they do a lot of drug testing.

I've also been entertaining the thought of joining one of the branches of military.  One of the things that has me interested is the travel and adventure that they show in all the commercials (:ohwell:).  You see, I've just finished the first semester of my junior year at the university (BS in electrical engineering), and while I do enjoy it and plan to finish my degree, I often get tired of sitting at a desk doing homework all the time.  Over the summer, I had a good job working as an electrician on a natural gas compressor station, and I loved working out of state, working outside, and just adventuring in the meantime.

So anyway, I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is the travel/adventure aspect of the military as cool as it sounds?  Do you actually get to see the world, or are you kinda penned up overseas somewhere?

Also, tell me what you know about each of the branches. The Navy has been sending me mad recruitment info, and it really seems like a good deal, but I've heard that the Air Force is the way to go.  I actually almost joined the Air Force ROTC my freshman year.

It really depends what you do and where they decide to station you. My cousin joined the marine corps last year and lives in Japan now. My father went all over the place. Japan, korea, thailand, philippines, canada, australia, saudi arabia, iraq, and theres probably a few I'm missing out. It just really depends on what kind of job you have in the military.

i had three friends that joined, i actually went with 2 of them to the recruiting office to check it out but i knew it wasn't for me.

1 hates it.
1 loves it.
1 says it's okay.

since it's a contract with the gov...it's a gamble. if there were no contract i would have joined for the schooling.

Most people I talk to like the military. I know 3 marines and 2 of them love it. The other likes his job but not the structure. All my Navy buddies like the military, and my 2 airforce buddies dont like it too much. It all depends on the job and the person.

both of my friends were in battle. My one friend doesn't like talking about a lot of shit he saw... Its one thing seeing an online video of someone being blown up by a land mine, imagine seeing that happen to your close friend right next to you. Some people go through some fucked up psychological shit and they could pay for it mentally the rest of their lives.

Okay, well, I guess I have a lot to address (maybe more so to myself than you guys.)

I've seen my friend (granted, it's only been for two days) and I see that he hasn't changed in a ridiculous way. Don't get me wrong, I can notice differences (physical and mental), but none of the changes that I view as negative that I thought he may undergo. He's pretty similar to me too, so I'm fairly confident that I wouldn't come out being some mindless fuck who couldn't think for myself (obviously that's an extreme, and I can't know unless I actually do it for myself.) He has definitely changed in good ways though. He was lazy and had no self-discipline when it came to getting shit done. I'm pretty sure he'll be different now. My brother had similar changes (he did Army reserves), not as much of a change, but he was also waaaaaaaay lazier, and the Marine basic is much different than Army basic.

Another positive is the alternative to college. Some of you may know I've been looking for one, and I always said the wasn't military for me. However, being down there, seeing my friend and the base and new recruits and his fellow graduates I have changed my mind on those thoughts. The things I thought that made the military for me I think have changed. I used to think I couldn't handle drill sargent's basically treating me like a piece of shit, or the physical strain of training. What you go through in training isn't what you go through all 4 years of active duty. They treat recruits like pieces of shit, not Marines. I can handle three months (actually, you're only a recruit for 2.5 or something, I don't know exactly) of that.

I know if I talk to a recruiter they're going to make it seem amazing, I work in sales I know how that shit works. I understand what I would sign up to do may not (most likely would not) end up what I do. I also understand that I'm not in shape to do join now. If I did make this decision, it would not be til next year, I would have to work out before hand. I wouldn't just join being able to beet the bare minimum physically, either, I would make sure I was as prepared as possible.

I have a million things flying through my head about it, I had more to write but my mind can't stay still about it. When I get a chance to talk to my friend one-on-one then I'll do that. For all I know this is just another "man this would be a good idea" fleeting thought and drop the idea in two weeks.

(Part of me is waiting for this to reach OTD and get me ass raped for some reason or another.)

The airforce would be my number one choice for sure. It is the closest to a civilain job you will get in the military, and they have BY FAR the nicest facilities out of all the branches. I have several friends in the airforce and they all love it. If you go this route try and get an airborne job because for every day you fly you get 2 days off, very nice. The airforce has no problem hitting their recruiting numbers so you won't be getting any bonuses here most likely.

You will get to travel the most in the navy, but you have to like being on the move basically all the time. You have to REALLY like being on the water obviously as well (I'm a land lover no way I could handle this). But if you don't mind being at sea for 6 months at a time you will travel all over the world basically. Your personal space/sleeping quarters on a ship is basically nil though.

Marines, brace yourself.... this is obviously the most strict of all the branches (smallest branch) but if you want to be cock diesel go for it. People don't say "I am in the marines" they say "I am a marine" it is fucking serious. All marines are rifleman first and then their assigned job next. Marines are the first to go and the last to come home in war, but you have the satisfaction to know you are a part of the most elite fighting force in the world.  I have a several friends in the marines and it seems like its either a love it or hate it deal.

Army I actually know the least about and that's what I'm joining LOL. They are the biggest branch, have probably the most relaxed admission standards (b/c they need ppl so bad), and you can get the biggest bonuses from the army. Iraq tours for both the army and marines are 13 months now and the airforce tours are usually about 3 months so that's something to consider as well. I don't know anyone in the army so my info is kinda limited on it, but I think they have some of the shittier facilities too. The army is probably the easiest to move up the ranks as well. As I said before they were the only branch that would let me come in directly as an officer so that's why I'm going army.

Keep in mind as others have said you are pwned by the government. You can request where you want to go but you'll only go where they need to fill a position. Make absolutely sure if you do join that it something you REALLY want to do because its not like a regular job you can quit if you don't like it. It will be near impossible to get a job with a dishonarable discharge from the military.

Anyway I tried to just give a general overview of things if you have any specific questions let me know....

It might be good for you, but you might not want to do the Marines. If you found out that the military was for you and wanted to make it a career you are smart enough to advance up the ladder. I'm not sure how much you can actually do that in the Marines so you might think of another branch.

After seeing what the military did to my brother, theres no fucking way I would ever join. He is also pretty fucked up in the head from going to Iraq and getting wounded. Also, I am way to opinionated to join the military.

Wow you really are an ignorant fuck. The military schools in the USA are some of the most elite schools in the country. You think they let just any jackass fly a billion dollar plane?

Dude, you think every officer went through Military school? Most of those cats just have degrees from 4 year colleges, you come in O-1. Did the miltary to get away from drugs, found out theres a lot more drugs in San Diego than where I was living. Well not that there was more, but I could get them all in the exact same place which was convienient. But anyway, that shit got me kicked out, just as well too, cause I joined for the wrong reasons. My buddy went Marines, and he came back from boot a different person. I don't mean he carried himself taller or anything, but he became an even bigger self righteous prick than I thought possible. A lot of my marine buddies in rehab swore to me up and down that not joining the corp was the best decision of my life.
The corp, it will fuck you over. The Fleet, it will fuck you over, Army strong, fuck you over, Air Force.... Actually I never met anyone in the Air Force.

EDIT: By the by, a lot of the military jobs in iraq don't carry over qualifications in the civilian world. Like if you drive trucks for the Army, that cert doesnt count for shit here. Most of the tech fields are good, you could actually go through your school, then get a medical discharge for being fucked in the head, and get a pretty good job, but you have to go for a good tech field. BTW you only need a 75 of 99 to be a nuclear engineer for the military. Gives you an idea how high the bar is set for intelligence

Its not really a good idea to go for a job where you kill people for a living.

The bad karma kind of permeates the atmosphere - You have republicans tricking the american people into war, and they give the military massive funding. So are you supposed to like the republicans or hate them? Most people in the military both likes and despises pro-war repubicans, and the hypocritical undertones make it really hard to have a normal life where you feel good about what you do.

Born to kill with the middle finger on one side
Peace sign on the other bro

The idea is that killing becomes a job, not something you think about. You shoot the fucker trying to shoot you and keep going. Its brainwash really but what can you do? ::shrug::

And Karma is a non-issue for the boys over there. Karma doesnt rip through your flesh like a 7.62 FMJ

Or a 5.45 cartridge (AK-74).

Is it karma that being in a job that requires you to kill gets you killed?

No thats just logic. If you sign up for infantry and think "Fuck yeah I get to kill people without any danger to myself" then you probably will and desrve to get fragged over there. Secondly if you're willing to kill for someone else's profit, that benifits you in no way, well I don't consider you someone worth the life you were given. Now some of the Devil Dogs I know actually switched their MOS to infantry because they wanted to keep their brother alive. Thats a lot more noble to me than saying "I get to waste some ragheads" which they do indeed say. Not agreeing with the fight, but going to try to keep your friends alive... Thats something to respect.

Be prepared for your worst nightmares. You'll be dreaming of nothing but being a killing machine. What's so good for being blood thirsty to people you don't have relationship yet or even know them personally?  What's so good for being blood thirsty to people you don't know personally? :arabs:

Whoa whoa whoa.... The connection between the counter culture in the 60's was coincidental. There was a lot going on back then dealing with civil rights and free expression of ideas and feelings. You think Leary wouldn't have spoken about droping out of the system if there had been no war?
The counter culture had its opinion about the war, the war didn't create counter-culture. Sure it drew some people to it but it still wasnt the cause.
Our generation, apathetic and selfless (not the good kind), will never feel strongly as a mass one way or the other, until someone on the media says its cool.
Give you an example, a friend of mine from high school heard me blasting Against Me! during lunch and said it was terrible. Same friend saw Against Me! on MTV this week and has become obsessed.

could just be that it took more than one listen to really start digging it. first time or two i listened to the national i was rather nonplussed. thought they were bland and mediocre. but after a few more listens, i started to really get the urge to listen to them. and eventually i realized i was in love. a fair amount of music works like that for me.
