it will fruit for years and you can go on the family vacation and not worry about your bed drying out.

so what would the "dry" bed do to the mycelium... does it just stop the colony from fruiting and make it dormant? and then a can come back and replenish it with water and it will start fruiting?

I think I advised against that tek before you built it. At least I advised against it within the last week or so. I recommend to mix the manure into the soil, but not to build a box that will attract insects to the different food source than the native one, and in addition, will flood when it rains.
I'd remake it without the plywood box. Drying out a bit is good. It will encourage the mycelium to branch out more in search of food and water. RR

heh i realized waht u suggested and i took it into consideration. what i did was move out some weeds and stuff and just had a soily bottom and i layed some hay down that i soaked for like 2 days, the water smelt wierd and looked yellow.. but i put down hay, some spawn. more hay, cow manure, more hay, more spawn, and a peatmoss and vermiculite mix.
this created like a little bed that is slightly raised off the ground. i then watered it down and lined the outside of it with snail and slug pellets so they have to eat there way threw the death pellets to get to my mushrooms. then i took the soil i unearthed and sort of put it back around it.. what should i plant around it?
